I'm not so sure since this deal ensures a qualifying offer of $6,825,000 to keep O'Reilly as a RFA in 2015

If that 1st ends up being top 5 - dear lord.

I agree with the 1st part.

But the 2nd, I am not concerned about that. We aren't bottom 5 without Kipper and O'Reilly. To think we would get help offensively, defensively, in faceoffs and the PK (this is where Kipper helps us the most), I think it is extremely unlikely we fall in the standings.

I don't understand how anyone could hate this.
Besides Baertschi and that's still a maybe - when's the last time we had a first rounder with his upside?

I'd gladly pay a first and third for a centreman that's had success at this level.

This guy is going to be under an insane amount of pressure for a 21 year old who isn't projected to be a high-impact first line player.

He's 21... and more of a sure thing than any future draft pick. I understand not wanting to lose draft picks, but this IS a move for the future

Who cares, alienate every other gm in the division. It's not like they ever make trades with each other anyway, might as well try and improve yourself.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
COL has 7 days to match the offer or accept compensation of CGY's 1st round pick and CGY's 3rd round pick.
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie If COL matches the offer, COL cannot trade O'Reilly for one calendar year from day it matches the offer.
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie Structure of deal designed to deter COL. That includes getting a $2.5M signing bonus now and a really low salary ($1M) rest of season.
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie Kicker, tho, is $6.5M salary next season. Ignoring ROR's arb rights, COL would have to qualify him at $6.5M upon expiry of this deal.
Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger A very aggressive move by the Flames. However, other GM's suggest Colorado could have fetched more than a 1st and 3rd via trade.

The question about whether Avs match or not depends on how much they stick to their principles on what Salary of RFA without arbitratraion rights should be

I'm not thrilled with the move either, but adding a 21-year old center who has already put up 55 points is hardly counter to a "rebuild".

Doesn't it have to be a calendar year they have to hold him? That was the issue with Weber, since all his bonus money would be paid out by the time they could trade him
