Cole was certainly worth every penny of that contrast last year.

Nieuwendyk probably knew he wasn't re-signing Ryder and likes what Cole adds to the team, along with having previous chemistry with Whitney.

With the loss of Ott and the additions of Roy, Whitney, and Jagr, I would assume that Dallas wanted some more size and physicality in their top 9.

If Cole plays up to his abilities, then it is a fair trade (but there is no guarantee of that happening).
And I thought the trade favoured Mtl even before I heard about the pick as well.

			Ryder AND a third?
Weird. I would've thought it would be Cole and a 3rd conditional on Ryder re-signing.

My thoughts exactly.. Ryder is 2 years younger and is having a way better season... Don't understand this move from Dallas's angle. They say that they want more size, so they trade one of their top scorers for Cole?

It'll be interesting to see the way he's accepted by Montreal's crowd.. They HATED him when he decided to sign in Boston.

Outside of shooting Ryder brings nothing to the table, Cole is a better all around player and helped out Pacioretty/Desharnais game immensely.
Maybe Bergevin needs cap space to go after Perry if/when he becomes a UFA |

joe nieuwendyk seems (to be seen on this one) to be getting the losing end on a lot of deals recently... this one is a head scratcher since ryder seemed to be doing well playing with eakin, guess they need that left hand shot?

Nice trade for Montreal. Dallas JMO didn't get the best of this deal.

Cole was doing nothing and his post lockout comments sealed the deal. He's been playing like he retired all season.

I can't believe anyone watching hockey would say Ryder is a better player than Cole... Cole adds so much more than Ryder, who's really a shooter and nothing more. Cole may be having a brutal season, I'm not arguing that point...but c'mon, he's a superior player by good margin.
Considering their respective salaries, I agree there didn't need to be a pick involved here though... At least not that high of a pick.

			Nieuwendyk:
Neal + Niskanen to Pitt for Goligoski

 Ryder + 3rd for Cole

I just dont understand his reasoning for either trade TBH. At the time I guess Neal was comparable to Bourque, but adding Niskanen seems bizarre.

And now this deal... Cole is only getting older, and I believe his cap hit is 4 mill for the next 2 seasons. Why do this?

This trade looks puzzling at first but makes more sense if you look at the details. Ryder is a pending UFA and Dallas probably knows they can't re-sign him, so they trade him now for a temporarily slumping star in Cole who has 2 years left at a reasonable cap hit.
Good resource management by Nieuwendyk since he gets Cole who is probably good for 25 goals per season in exchange for Ryder who will most likely walk away for nothing if he's not dealt.

I think the Habs win this deal is its player for play and everything is equal.
But the Habs also save $8 million on Cole's contract and get a pick? Hahaha stupid Nieuwendyk.

If this trade happened in NHL 13 I would say "stupid CPU making another unrealistic trade".
Both players had career highs last year...
