That isn't an insult to Wotherspoon but a comment on how hard it is to play in the NHL as a 20 year old defenseman.
Not saying the Flames will pick him, but I think the team (even it were Pittsburgh somehow) that drafts Seth Jones this year would be wise to allow him to play another year of junior hockey for not only his own good but the team's own good to also...save a year contract-wise, and allow a guy to develop at his own pace.

(I'd also be surprised if Wotherspoon made the Flames next year, but wouldn't it be nice to see a Flames prospect-no matter who it is-come out of nowhere, and make the team and thrive for a change?)

(I'm really more curious than being snarky here with my question; as I wrote above, I do believe it's in a player's best interest to not be rushed to play in the NHL.)
i just don't think a world juniour tournament can shift a players potential judgement all that much given it's just one batch of games.

i am also becoming very, very, reserved at looking at any player's juniour achievements (unless they are essentially topping the CHL/NCAA) as too much depends on factors like linemates and being on a top ranked team.

Dmen, just can't be rushed. my guess is wotherspoon gets 1, if not 2, full years in the AHL before he is looked at as a potential regular in the NHL. that's not a knock on him. But status quo for 95% of dmen draftees.

I agree. Weisbrod even said they don't look at the World Juniors as an evaluation tool, they already know what they got from their prospects, a small tournament isn't going to change their minds a lot.

I could see Wotherspoon being an injury call up for the next 2 seasons, probably getting around 20-30 total NHL games in that time, then cracking the opening day line-up in the 2015-16 season.

I heard Weisbrod say the same thing. I think Darryl Sutter said something similar a few years ago. (Although I think Darryl's comment had more to do with that not all the best players at that age are there.)

It's a little over-hyped, I'd say.

I don't think it's an issue of it being over-hyped.

Management and scouts don't put too much into a handful of games for obvious reasons.

But the rest of us don't get to watch these kids every night - it is our chance to see them, and for that reason, it is highly anticipated.

Anticipated as a chance to see these kids is one thing - those fans that infer success at the tourney as being some critical measuring stick, well, that's another. But those fans will hype their favourites regardless.

ouch, Brossoit has been lit up twice in a row - gave up 4 goals on 18 shots before being pulled in a 6-4 loss to Spokane, then gave up all 8 goals on 36 shots in an 8-1 embarrassment against Tri-City. Kind of surprising after his lights out play in the last few weeks.

On a more positive note, Wotherspoon is a +58 this season. Only trailing teammate Nicolas Petan (+64) in the WHL, but because of the WJC, Wotherspoon has played just 53 games in comparison to Petans 63.

Elson scored a goal yesterday and has almost identical stats in comparison to last year:

2011-12: 55 games, 21 goals + 25 assists = 46 points
2012-12: 55 games, 21 goals + 26 assists = 47 points

However, he's +23 this season in comparison to -7 last year.

From what I've heard, the Oil Kings have forgotten how to play defence these last few games.

Some stats from yesterday - John Ramage had the game-winning goal and an assist in a 5-0 win over Penn State, and Brett Kulak also had 1+1. Bill Arnold, Turner Elson, and Coda Gordon all had an assist apiece in their various games.

Ramage has been quite clutch for the Badgers lately.

I really hope the Flames sign Ramage. Imagine a D pairing of Seiloff - Ramage to keep forwards accountable cutting through the center...

Ignoring his plus/minus last year, Ramage has an excellent college/junior resume.

I have a bad feeling that he refuses to sign with Calgary, goes UFA, and joins his buddy in Edmonton.

I really don't want to see that happen.

He has ties to the Flames organization via his dad. I'm not overly concerned.

I don't think that's going to happen. His dad played in Calgary and the Flames even tried to get him to pro sooner ... IIRC they even promised him his dad's number #55.

Right now, I'm more concerned that the Flames don't sign him ... Weisbrod wasn't too excited about Ramage in that Fan960 interview back then.

Maybe Weisbrod is just a good poker player, and doesn't want to show his hand this early.

Ferland with another 2 assists as the Blades win again, thats 16 wins in a row. Ferland now with 7+20=27 points in 22 games with the Blades. Got to like the fact that he's playing in a such a winning environment right now, and the fans in Saskatoon seem to love him.
