I just think people are going to be really disappointed if or when he is traded and they see what his value is. I don't think he is the kind of player at this point in his career that another team mortgages their future for.
Even if we did get a young player with top 6 potential, with the free agency age being 27, there is no guarantee that the player would be around by the time the rebuild starts to bear fruit. And I know I don't have to mention that late 1st round draft picks are anything but a sure thing.
As someone else mentioned, at least Iginla has the element of being an ambassador. He loves Calgary and can sell other players on it. He has value to the franchise besides just what he does on the ice.

I disagree, he does have value. People were writing him off before last Olympics, even the coaches had him playing on the bottom line but look at who came through in the end? He is in great shape so put him on a line which he doesn't to carry and watch out.
As far as people being disappointed, there will be a huge part of this fan base that will not even care about the return, they'll be sad to see Iggy go and probably jump off the bandwagon. There'll be another part of the fan base that will be excited for a new start, no more one step forward two step backwards. You trade Iggy you're telling everyone we're re-building, a new hope.

You mean Regher the 6th D-man on a bad Buffalo team making over 4 million

Not at all. It was clear that Feaster viewed Regehr as an expendable asset, and so far Regehr is proving him to be spot on in his assessment.
Now when you listen to Jay talk about Jarome and Kipper specifically, you know just how highly he regards these two players. That suggests to me that if they were to be traded, it would be for a great return.
I know most scrutinize him for the Brad Richards trade but he was essentially forced to trade one of the big three by ownership*, and did quite well based on the talent he acquired. Mike Smith, Jussi Jokinen, and Jeff Halpern were/all are good to great NHL players.

Do you think that the Sabres are thrilled at paying their 5th defenseman $4 million a season? The Sabres lost this deal hands down and remember they also too on a full season of Kotalik's salary that Flames ownership didn't want to pay.

Neither team won that deal and certainly not hands down.
Both got lower level defensemen, Regehr much better but more expensive and Butler cheap but absolute garbage.
The secondary pieces aren't really that big a factor either right now but I guess they could swing the deal if Byron or Mccabe (I think was the pick) turn out.

As I've said before, the problem had with the Regher trade at the time, was the rush to get him and Kotalik off the books at the draft, for the longshot of a run at Richards a week later.
The return for Regher could've been better IMO if he waited for the teams that didn't get the top UFA's in the first week in July, and those teams needed to settle or match a divsion opponent's UFA pickup with a trade for a tougher defenseman like Regher.
Of course, with Regher's stock dropping last year, its much less of a issue in hindsight.

Flames jettisoned $10 million dollars which was by design. You can bet that Murray Edwards and Company think they won the deal. It's not often you can sell a team to take on $11 million in salary in return for a 2nd round pick and a defenseman that can no longer play top 4 minutes.

Sure Murray Edwards can be happy but I would hope the team is in the business of making trades to help the team on the ice not in the pocketbook and this deal did not help the Flames on the ice.
Its not everyday the Sabres can pick up a free second round pick for a few million dollars that won't matter to their owner anyways.

I've watched some Buffalo games this year and the bolded part could apply to Reggie also. Good god that guy has lost a couple of steps. It's no wonder that he has spent time in the press box. He looked slower than Sarich if that's possible. They paid $11 million for Regehr's services and he has come nowhere near meeting expectations.

Well, $9m of that money was earmarked by Feaster for wooing Richards 8 days later.

If that money was chump change you can bet the Feaster would have let Kotalik rot in Abbotsford and keep the 2nd round pick to bolster the teams talent base. All I'm saying is you can't judge Feaster on a salary cutting deal that was likely mandated by ownership.
Regehr's salary may have been for Richards but considering Feaster wanted to get the team younger and faster Robyn was obviously never in the long term picture.

That is why I said nobody won that deal.
Doesn't seem to have worked out well for anyone other than Murray Edwards getting a little more walking around money.

Feaster has already been quoted as saying that management OFFERED to put Stajan and Hagman down in the minors when he asked for permission to send Kotalik down.
This 'saving money' BS is constantly being brought back up, and I don't know why. Team spends to the cap every year, and then some. Saving money is NOT a 'mandate' by the owners at all.
Flames needed to sign their own FA's (Tanguay) and also needed the cap room for Richards. I have no idea why posters here are convinced that the owners stepped in and forced that trade to go down in order to save money, when EVERYTHING they have done shows that they are more than willing to spend money.

Perhaps since Feaster was planning on spending upwards of $70M on Richards and potentially having to put Hagman or Stajan in the minors he was told to try and dump Kotalik in the Regehr trade. Butler isn't great but we still came out decent in that trade. Regehr is the single most over-rated asset this team has had post lockout. I remember when many if us thought we were getting a 21 year old Jordan Staal straight up for him

So Feaster gave up a 2nd round pick for what then? If money wasn't an issue then why give up a 2nd round pick especially given the lack of prospects and need for every draft pick possible? I'm not buying that at all.

I guess he means it was money saved against the cap and make capspace, not necessarily important because owners wanted to save money for themselves.

One of the bloggers on Hockeybuzz came out with some trade proposals for Iggy. One of them was Ryan Spooner and a 1st for Iggy. Boston seems like a good fit. There is also the Weisbrod connection. I don't know much about Spooner, does anybody have input?
I've also been watching flyer games and i don't see why they would want Iggy. They need help on D more than they need another RW.
