It really had nothing to do with hits. It was mostly board battles.
LA was the bigger, faster, tougher team and they imposed their will on us. Flames had no answer for the physicality and I made that comment in the first 5 minutes of the game.
Darryl Sutter came in here and embarrassed the Flames with a big tough team that is strong down the middle. Exactly what he preached would win hockey games when he was here.

Personally I thought speed was the bigger issue last night.
Not only are the Flames small we are also quite slow. Carter especially was abusing us with his speed in the neutral zone.
Their speed in the neutral zone allowed them to generate great back pressure, and that pressure made the Flames unable to string more then one pass together last night.
IMO this game last night was not lost from board battles, it was lost in the neutral zone. The Flames couldn't get through the neutral zone, and the Kings were flying through it.
Issue with team isn't just that they are small...it is that we are small and slow especially with Backlund and Baertschi out of the lineup.

I agree.
It's not just a small team like the Sabres used to be, it's a small, slow team.
Sucks for a guy like Cammalleri, but even as a 40 goal guy, he's not worth 6 million a year because he has no other element to his game.
It was the right call to not sign him to that crazy deal and a bad call (assuming he doesn't pick his game up and Calgary doesn't ship him and some others out) to trade for him.
I can't believe how little Cammalleri does, I watched him stand in front of the net and do nothing for entire plays. Wont go to the boards, wont fight for the puck. Just stand there all night.
I wonder how many people think the Cammalleri deal is such a great deal now. He makes $7M and is the highest paid player on the team... but sure doesn't look like it.

I think it should have been obvious to anyone the Flames were a sub-90 pts team.

This teams weakness at center is being completely exposed. It's hard to be a puck possession team when you start every shift trying to get the puck back, and frankly this team doesn't look interested in doing the little things to get the puck back. God forbid they do have the puck. I can not believe how many of this teams passes get intercepted, and it feels like the passes that don't the players just can't handle and cough the puck up anyway.
I wonder if some how we can blame this all on Brent Sutter. He was such an easy scapegoat.
Any chance the Flames are actually doing a Oilers "lose on purpose" ?
No center ice depth, Comeau on the 1st line, Blair Jones as your first player on shootout, having a butter soft team (Butler soft team?) .... maybe Feaster/Flames are really trying to suck on purpose but keep the tag line of "win now" just for the new building? (As long as you ignore trading the 2nd round picks anyways)

Calgary had zero succession planning, and we will have to deal with it as a franchise.
Summary of the Flames the past half decade

Oh, and does anybody remember that one game versus Nashville almost a where we sent out Regehr, Rhett, Commodore and Sarich in the last minute and we gave Nashville a lineup beatdown? Hilarious to see Regehr taking the faceoff...
Kind of miss those days...

I actually watched the Ducks-Flames brawl when I got home last night.
I miss when this team was tough to play against.

It was 2004, so not Sarich but it was even worse... Oliwa.
The Flames and Nashville had a nice little rivalry at one point. Iginla and Vokoum didn't like each other and would get into a chirping match most games.
Regehr - Oliwa
Warrener - Commodore
Amazing lol

Not to kick everyone when they are down, but just probed around the office (lots of Kings fans here, lots of people from LA)... to get a view from the other side, they are talking about how much their defense sucked, all the chances they sucked, and apperently Darryl is pretty unhappy about his team's play and benched one of their D for the 17 minutes (?) ... apparently wasn't their best game this season and just happy to get the W.
Thanks for kicking us when we're down...

They are also missing 3 of their top 4 defenders and played the backup.
Since the 04 lockout every Stanley Cup winner has had a recent #1 or #2 pick, except Detroit and Anaheim.
While having high draft picks doesn't guarantee a Cup, it does seem that they are almost necessary to win one in this era.
The Flames should tank this year, acquire as many draft picks as possible at the deadline and do a one-year psuedo-rebuild with a top 2 pick.
Yes, that Kings team was nowhere near their best team. Playing the second half of back to backs without 3 of their top 6 defencemen at a minimum and playing their backup goalie and they dominated. The only good news for the Flames is that games 20-24 are extremely difficult. By the halfway point in the season what needs to be done should be painfully obvious to even the most rose coloured observers of the hockey club.
It seems that everyone can see the issues pretty clearly, except Flames management. If they don't trade Iginla, Cammy, Tanguay, Bou, and Giordano then we are in shambles going forward. We need prospects, picks, get some assets back and rebuild as quick as possible. You can't build around a 36 year old goalie, and 36 year old forward.
Intelectual honesy is a key phrase used by Feaster, but it seems like its just fluff.

I would probably throw Boston into that mix with an asterisk.
Seguin wasn't their own pick and he played a very small, piece role during the Stanley Cup run only playing in half the games.
As much as I despised that guy no matter where he was, probably becasue he was part of Vancouver and Toronto, anyways, to me he's that guy you hate to be up against but would love him on your team.
Burke has that arrogance that is deeply missing in this organization, and maybe if the owners are indeed meddlers, he could be that stubborn block head to sell them on gutting this team and building it up. I haev no doubt Feaster gets pushed around, bullied if you may, by the owners.

One of the defining moments for me of the night was when Bouwmeester was trying to hold the puck in the LA zone with about 10 minutes left, King instead just shoves Bouwmeester 2 feet right out of the zone along with the puck. No response.
The scary part for the Flames? LA didn't even play up to their full potential. Imagine the playoffs (lol) if Darryl has his guys dumping the puck, winning every race and cycling consistently like we saw last year. We just don't have the guys on the back end or wingers with the ability to do anything about it.
Are there seriously fans who are surprised at how horrible the Flames are? I think virtually every single knowledgeable hockey observer felt that this was a horrible hockey team and they are horrible. It would be like if John Davidson was shocked that Columbus sucked.
As for the excuse that it would be different if Kipper was in, I am wondering what game we lost that Kipper would have won
1) 5-1 loss to the Canucks
2) 2-1 SO loss to the Wild
3) 5-2 loss to St. Louis
4) 4-0 loss to Phoenix
5) 3-1 loss to LA
Even with Kipper this team is still 5-7-3 in my opinion.
have you forgotten the season prediction thread and how upset a lot of people were at the TSN prediction of 14th? Some people were saying it was a media conspiracy!
so, yes, there are people that are surprised about how poorly calgary is doing this year.
