Lot of Bruins fans saying this gives them cap space to make a deal for Iginla at the deadline - which makes no sense to me since they already HAD cap space, but whatever, they are from Boston.

Interesting thing is Islanders can toll his contract for next year so they can keep getting the cap hit next year and not have to pay him a penny.

It's smart but I don't like it. It's getting hard enough to trade a player like Stajan with high cap hit lower wage, and now you got to compete with a semi retired player?
Can Thomas continue to get traded to other cap floor teams over the next couple of years if they can toll his contract?

Calgary should sign Lanny, not have him report, and trade him to Dallas.

I think the NHL will be angrier than the NHLPA. In negotiations, the NHLPA was always willing to go the lower floor (or no floor) route but the NHL strictly opposed it.
It means less escrow for the players more than anything.

What a joke..... When there's guys out there like Balsillie, willing to pay real money to have a team, the NHL has a bankrupt team and another team with an owner who makes a mockery of the rules by pulling crap like this.
The Islanders are currently sitting tied 8th in the East, ahead of teams who make a genuine effort to be competitive and spend top dollar to do so. All the while, Chan continues to not care what direction his team takes, and isn't willing to actually make an attempt to be competitive by acquiring a real player(s).
The league is a joke.

He has been low key lately, being more of a reporter and Editorialist than a rumor monger. He also broke the Kimo timmonen re-signing last night too. The guy has always had clout, just wasted it to get his website more hits. Seems like he has finally figured out that his site can be legit with good hockey stories instead of busting out every single little rumor he hears about.

If you are going to throw a hissy fit about Balsillie's attempts to scam a team, you should probably check and see what his net worth is now. The NHL dodged a bullet.

True, but the NHLPA has shown that they would rather get as much money in the system as possible, then worry about escrow later. This deal effectively takes $5 million out of it.
That couldn't be helped this season one way or another, but if the Isles toll the contract on the understanding Thomas won't play, I could see someone making a charge of circumvention.

Didn't mean to say Balsillie should have a team, and I agree, the NHL likely did dodge a bullet, all I meant was there are people out there willing to be owners, and actually put their money into a team.

He saved Wang some cash but the team is still a compilation of hot garbage and John Tavares.

Doesn't seems so bad to me. The isles get the conne smythe winner from two years ago for basically nothing.

Not really, since they would have had to pay Cammallari in real dollars. The key to this deal is the fact that Islanders get articfical cap dollars without actually having to spend any money for this year. The Isles are probably hoping he doesn't ever report, just so they can keep carrying his artifical cap hit forward to be able to reach the cap floor through the rest of his contract.

I think the Isles would still be happy. Thomas/Nabokov would be a pretty deadly goaltending tandem.

That's supposing the Islanders want to win. Didn't they fire their last coach who got them into the playoffs.
