Hardly.
I just think it's hilarious/sad when people are all "Yeah well if I was there I would be all like 'SCREW YOU BITCH' and like spit in her face and kick her down the stairs!" even though they totally wouldn't do anything but shoe-gaze and mutter under their breath.

You totally nailed it. Not once did the thought cross my mind when I wrote that, that I have no clue which city she is a pastor in or that I had no desire to ever go there and do what I said I was going to do.
So glad you came along and bitchslapped me upside the head with your reality check, because I was just about to say what I was going to do to her holy water.
But now I will just stare at my shoes when I think of the pastor woman.

I've never been a server so I don't really have bias, but it's a ####ty job and they make #### all. Unless they outright do a bad job, tip them the standard.

Sure, but "the standard" is actually "the American standard" and they clearly have significantly different wages for tipped employees than we do. The question is why should the American 15%-25% be the Standard in Canada?

Because we're pretty much the same culture. Also, nowhere is the standard 25%. 15 to 16% is the average. 18% they do on large tables because people split the bills which inevitably leaves it short and it's more work.

Wait, what is the Canadian standard? And since when do service employees in either country earn more than minimum wage?

That's the question.
In Canada, minimum wage for tipped employees is virtually the same as minimum wage for non-tipped employees. E.g. Alberta minimum wage is $9.75 for most employees and $9.05 for employees who serve liquor. In the US, the federal non-tipped employee minimum wage is $7.25, while the tipped employee minimum wage is $2.13 (this varies by state as well).
It's pretty clear that servers in the US need significant tips to live, while it can be argued that they do not need the same level of tips in Canada.

Well depending on where you are it can also be much more expensive to live in Canada. Calgary is absurdly expensive.

Well. Yes. Clearly. That seems like the only reasonable thing to take from this whole story.

I'm surprised there isnt more of a backlash on that Pastor who started this by stiffing a waitress and coming back wanting to have the whole restaurant staff fired.
|
That backlash happened when the receipt was first posted, and led to the witch hunt to find her.

As someone who has served before, the best things ever are the 15% and 20% buttons on the debit machine. Soooooo many people just hit 15% or 20% cause they don't want to do the math.
I think servers in Calgary make pretty decent money for what they do. I've worked in places that are Applebee's-like in quality where I've averaged $15-20/hr just in tips.

THIS
dont feel bad for servers making minimum wage. feel bad for the cooks. they get not much more than minimum wage and only get a small percentage of the tipout of a server.
if servers have it so bad, how can they afford to live and work in kits here in vancouver?

She wins. Reveals/embarasses some cheapass loser priest AND she doesn't have to work at Applebee's anymore.

100% off topic, but I have been let go once. Every role I have had I have been considered a hard working up and coming potential - except this one.
At the time it hurt bad, but little while later I realized I just 100% did not mesh with their corporate culture, and it was actually for the best.
Still have sour grapes over how it was handled, but that is another story.
Sorry /end random story

I agree. Kitchen staff get the shaft. Even in places that have tip pool, you know the servers don't declare it all.
Kitchen work is grueling and you get scapegoated for all the servers mistakes, and miss out on the praise when you do a good job.

Well at most places I've worked or had friends work they have to tip out as a percentage of their ring out so when they get stiffed they actually have to "go out of pocket".
In any event, I like the fact that you can make a "livable" wage being a server, I see no problem with that.
