I do hope it looks good, but function over form every time for me.
9. Multiple bars interspersed throughout the arena. Dutton's is pretty much the worst.

When they renovated the Saddledome in 1995, they reduced the number of lower bowl seats by about a half, and converted about half of those that remained to Club Seats.

This time around, it will likely be the opposite, and the big complaints will be from people being moved from cheaper upper level seats to more expensive lower level seats.

This is my biggest concern. Right now I am in Sec 226 (whites I beleive) As long as my seats are very similer to my old ones and the concourse is bigger what the outside looks like is not important

an interesting article in the Globe tonight. Mentions that the plans are so far along that the Flames could be in a new arena before the Oilers are in theirs.

I was at a STH appreciation thing last night, where Ken King did a small Q&A before the game. Someone asked about the new arena, and the answer was it's been in the works for the last 4 years, and we'll hear more late fall.

Just spill the beans or don't say anything King. So goddamn sick of this "It's so far along", "It's been in the works so long" talk with *no* details. Is this ####ing thing just going to materialize one day and shock everyone? No. SO TELL US THE DETAILS OR STFU.

This comment on the Globe article has to be a troll...right? Right?

for me the perfect place for a new arena would be just north of McMahon Stadium between McMahon and Father David Bauer Arena there are many reasons why this place would be perfect:

1) You have access to two major roadways the Trans Canada Highway and Crowchild Trail
It is located along probably the worst stretch of Crowchild on the north side of the city. 16th by Motel Village to Foothills barely functions.

There is? That's why people walk from all over the NW streets they've parked on to get to Stamps games?

The Banff Trail station is inconvenient for McMahon as it is, never mind the north side of McMahon. Too many idiots at Stamps games already ignore the pedestrian overpass for accessing the station. Stamps games are total #### shows for Crowchild and 24th already, and they're only 8-10 times a year. Let's add another 40+ instances of this??

I can't keep a straight face for the time it takes me to read that sentence.

If you could actually pull that design off in Calgary I think it would be beyond amazing. Imagine being able to bust out a 37k seat configuration for every home playoff game. It would be bananas.

It would never happen, but building that type of facility would be absolutely visionary.

Probably not a troll, but definitely ignorant of reality. For one, the zoning of the area would likely prevent the building of a facility there, even if access and roads weren't a big problem. The adjacent neighbourhoods would put up a massive fight. Far more intense than Forest Lawn did when the Dome was proposed.

One thing though. Your comment about lack of parking is off base. There is insufficent parking for a stadium of 35,000. That would not necessarily be the case for an arena half its size.

Are there examples of outdoor stadium / separate arena sites around? Would the site 2 blocks north of the current dome have a big enough footprint to support this?

Moving the football stadium to that site would allow for outdoor concerts and events that the university area could never accommodate.

The Staples Centre is likely going to have a football stadium built right beside it if that's what your talking about. Check Farmers Field.

There are a few cities (Vancouver, Phoenix, Philadelphia, and others) where the hockey arena is within walking distance of the football stadium, but none actually share facilities.

The only one I can think of where an arena and stadium share a footprint is in Ottawa, where the north grandstand of the football stadium is built on top of the old arena (not Scotiabank Place, but the Civic Centre where the Sens played their first couple of seasons and where the 67s play): http://goo.gl/maps/vKiBI

The area north of the Saddledome would be large enough for both an arena and stadium. I made this a few months ago...

The smaller grey area is the footprint of the Jobing.com Arena, and the larger one is the footprint of the football stadium at the University of Connecticut (http://goo.gl/maps/6GcSP). The stadium holds 40,000, so I figured it was an appropriate size and shape of what we could expect from a McMahon replacement.

Some people have mentioned that Calgary Transit wants to close the transit garage on the east side there, so if that were to happen, there would be lots of room for an arena, stadium, and other developments.

But absolutely no economic development around them. Still basically a slum on non game days.
