Default Sportsnet Broadcast - Filtering Crowd Noise?

Does Sportsnet quiet down the crowd noise for their broadcasts?

I've been thinking this for years. All I can hear during the game is the commentators, players yelling at each other, and the puck hitting either sticks or the boards. It takes away from the excitement when you can't hear the crowd.

Am I the only one noticing this?

Would be nice if one rmillions could weigh in on the subject.

The only time it bugged me was during the player introductions because I wanted to hear the roar for Sven.

Give them time. They just figured out how to make Rob's voice come out of the centre speaker. Baby steps.

Yup, they have for years. They're amateurs.

The Dome is never a crazy wild place but that home opener in the first it was rocking. On TSN or CBC you'd have known that, on Sportsnet, nothing.

I don't understand.

What is exciting about playing in an empty rink? Why would they try to create that atmosphere?

I'm finding myself watching games on TSN/CBC that I don't give a brown banana about, but it's still more exciting than the games on Sportsnet.

The sound mixing is bad. The last game, on Monday, was just awful, with a soft and almost mumbling in their sleep Simmer and Kerr, and then a blasting out Millions with other noise and music obscuring his voice.

And yes they do muffle down the crowd noises in preference to stick and scraping skate sounds, it sounds like no one is there.

I find it odd.

I've always noticed this myself....but it's blatantly obvious tonight to me as I have my Sennheiser RS-180 headphones on and the sound of the crowd is clearly dampened. Way to take away from the experience.

Makes me appreciate TSN doing our games even more.

Haha. Also, the tape delay is still in effect. Kerr calls a wideman 'booming shot' as he's winding up

Yeah, the tape delay bothers me more than the crappy sound. It's seems like such a simple fix too, which makes it even more frustrating.

Maybe they damper the crowd volume to filter out the players' swearing ?

I love the NBC feeds where the cam behind the net catches every word in every scrum and you just know the producers are cringing with every cuss word. But crappy production overall. I hate when they show a commercial for another show, then Roger's voice clashes over the commercial's dialogue.

I don't know about sound mixing but I did enjoy when Edler got the penelty and Kerr said this is a new rule for this year and SN immediatly cut to an ad for zucchini sticks.

So I've been wondering lately what's really dragging down my interest in hockey. Is it that there was a long lockout? Is it that the Flames have had some slow starts and now 3 losses in a row? Is it just the winter blues?

Nope. It's Sportsnet.

Growing up on Cole and Neale Hockey Night in Canada, now a mix with TSN, and the last few years really loving Doc Emrick on NBC and their whole production. Even boring games of teams I have no rooting interest for on NBC & TSN are way more exciting to watch than catching my favourite team on the Sportsnet tomb.

Time to step it up SN.

I don't think sportsnet drowns out the noise. When the flames play at the dome on tsn it is still pretty quite. The dome had the nickname " the library" for many years for a reason.

I fly into the dome a couple of times a year and have been to other staduims and the dome is noticeably quieter. I went to a game in Carolina with it half full and it was just as loud if not louder.

How else are we going to hear the conversational tones of Mr Kerr?

The Dome is quite because of all the company owned season tickets that are always given to old people.

But Sportsnet does have really crappy sound mixing. TSN games always sound way more intense.
