Went to the blades game tonight. Ferland looked really good in the first period. He was hitting and just appeared to be a physical force out there, had two nice assists as well.
Unfortunately he wasn't on the ice for a lot of the third, not sure what was up with that

The Flames have 48 pro contracts tied up and have until June 1 to sign Laurent Brossoit and Tyler Wotherspoon.
Flames can't sign Johnny Gaudreau early unless they move out a contract.

I could be wrong but don't they have until July 1st next year to sign a contract? If I remember correctly you have 3 years to sign a player after they are drafted, so since they were drafted in 2011 they would have to be signed by July 1st 2014.

Wouldn't those contracts not quick in until July 1, though, where we lose contracts Kolanos and Nemisz (anyone whose deal is up)?

The way NHL contracts and the CBA account for deals, they "begin" whenever they're signed but aren't "active" until the deal begins.
The Flames had to move out a contract last year in the Wideman trade, despite Wideman being a pending UFA, because they were at 50 contracts.
It's a weird rule.

They had to trade away a contract in order to acquire Wideman because they were acquiring his expiring Washington contract. His signing was technically a contract extension, not a UFA signing.
Brossoit and Wotherspoon could both be signed to their ELCs at any time because they would get the entry-level slide. Last year, the Flames had Baertschi and Reinhart under contract, but they didn't count on the 50 contract count because they had slid to this year.
Last year, the Flames signed David Eddy after his college season ended, but it couldn't take effect until this season because they were at the 50 contract limit. Feaster has talked about being in discussion with some college kids last year who wanted to have their contracts start last season to burn a year of their ELC to get them closer to free agency (and more money), but the Flames couldn't make that offer.

Wahl had an assist in his return in Utah. However he also got kicked out of the game for abuse of official.

Jankowski has 0 points in a 6-5 win for PC.
Gilles gives up 5 goals but makes 37 saves for the win.
Gaudreau has the game-winning goal (or assisted on it) for 10 of Boston College's 14 wins this year.

Another fun fact about my evening at the blades game, I ended up sitting beside Rich Sutter, his son and Winnipeg Jets draft pick, Lukas Sutter plays on the Blades.

Granlund has 6 points in 6 games since the world juniors. His ice time has gone up something like 3 minutes per game above his season average. If I'm not entirely mistaken, he's been centering the first line.
Ortio's numbers have fallen a tiny bit but he's still one of the league leaders in wins with 16. 91.97sv%, 2.35 gaa.
The big news today is that HIFK have finally fired their coach and hired Raimo Summanen. Summanen is, at his best, a brilliant and demanding coach, but he's also kind of nuts. Short term, if HIFK has anything to offer this season, he's probably the best guy to get it out of them. Long term, well usually there is no long term with Summanen, because he will often either alienate his superiors, his players, or just leave. But aside from his personality issues, I think he's an amazing coach.
Anyway, it'll be interesting to see if Granlund can impress his new coach. Summanen is not going to tolerate anything half-assed. It'll be very tough for Markus if he can't do what his coach will ask of him. He's very passionate but he can get nasty if he's not getting what he wants. Still, I'd think the veterans will be the first to get into his spotlight.

Never heard anything about Summanen having such problems. He's just intense.

Wotherspoon has reached his point totals from last year in 31 fewer games.

Brossoit was featured in the Home Owners top prospect segment during the game tonight. Have any other flames prospects been featured in it before?

I sure hope he pushes for a position with the Flames next year.

Your hopes will then be crushed. Two way D-men such as Tyler usually take a longer time to develop and he will definitely need some time in Abbottsford, as in a year or two. I wouldn't be surprised to see him stay in the WHL next year in all honesty, and you also have to question if his point production is inflated because he is playing with Seth Jones.

I'd be very surprised if he spent a 5th year in the WHL. He's shown that he can compete at a higher level and there is no point in him returning to Portland. His playing with Jones is a plus as he'll be ready to take on this role in the pros.

His points probably are inflated, but I thought he played well at World Junior -at least in the earlier games. Even Bob McKenzie stated that. But a fifth year in junior seems unlikely to me as well. Plus the Flames aren't flush with d-men prospects, and Weisbrod seems uncommitted in signing Ramage. Though, like most d-men, you're right, they usually need time to develop.

The Flames really dont have legit D prospects in the AHL right now.
I wouldnt be suprised to see Wotherspoon and perhaps Culkin in the AHL next year.
