Honestly though, I have lost more weight than that on a strict diet of 3 lean cuisine meals / fruit a day over the course of a month and I was not obese like her.

How many calories are in Fish Broth & Big Macs?

what they did book keeping wise and corruption wise and what Spence is doing aren't entirely different. Why aren't there more out cries from the media and the people and everyone else to hold Spence and her boyfriend to the same standards.

We chuckled at Rob Fords situation and a lot of media circuits and other groups openly cheered when the courts had him thrown out of office. Yet we're not hearing the same outcries for Spence.

I know I'm going to sound like a horrible person, but Spence isn't being held to the same standards because she's a Band Chief, and to me that's wrong.

If we're going to fix the system the first thing that has to happen is that we have to treat these situations the same way as we would treat a corporation, or a corrupt mayor or anything like that and not be blinded by the color of her skin or the people that she supposedly represents.

We're doing the Native's in Canada a huge disservice by not working harder to expose crap like this and seeing it dealt with like we would deal with everything else.

My 2 cents and two glasses of scotch talking.
The main problem with the res system is it is based on an unchanged 2000 year old political structure, tribes, that everyone else dumped about 2000 years ago.

It is probably not legally possible due to treaty obligations but what we as Canada should do is refuse to deal with bands and force them to politically coalece either into a provincial structure or a nation structure (ie Cree or Coast Salish) so that the money goes to a larger group with access to more talent and greater internal oversight, if you have 200 or so bands being represented by a 'nation' you can bet they will be keeping an eye on how the money is spent better, natives are no different to the rest of us in this, you will always find the greatest level of corrupt incompetance at the municipal level and the idea that we would be able to find anyone able to competantly oversee 140 million or so out of a town of 2000 people, most of whom have little more than a grade 5 eduction is asinine.

This may not be the thread for this, or it may have been discussed to death, but:

Is it time to do away with the Treaty(s) and Indian Act?

Have we created 2 classes of citizens?

The Indian Act and Treaties will eventually become irrelevant.

In a few hundred years Canada won't be seen as a country of 'the white man' it will be predominately multicultural and horrors of the 'white man's' colonial past will become less relevant.

Natives on reserves will become more alienated with corrupt Chiefs and move to large cities for work and opportunities.

The Reserves will receive less and less funding until eventually they are turned into protected crown land.

The trouble is they don't recieve less funding for less people, the band still registers off res band members and recieves funding for them.

So do you see this as being done by an act of parliment or a case of the laws just going "out of style", to use a poor example like the bylaw requiring businessed in calgary to have a hitching post out front.

If she actually starves to death, I'll take it seriously.

Until then ...

Yes. It's race-based policy.

Not classes per se; but the system doesn't help them succeed.

How does it hinder them? If there are bonuses to having Status, I would suggest it is an aid to succeeding. Now if individuals access that aid, that is another question.

Going 'out of style'.

eventually they will be assimilated / absorbed into the rest of the Canadian population.

its been said and reported that young natives don't even bother to learn their native tongue or customs anymore.

their history and culture will eventually be all forgotten. It could take 100 years or 1,000 years, but it is inevitable.

I am curious what eventually will happen to reserves. But then again, I am also curious what Canadian cities will look like in 1,000 years too!

I will preface this with - I may not word it in the best possible way.

As I understand it many of the benefits only apply if you live "on reserve"; but then there are restrictive rules on the reserve.

IE: You can't (don't) own your home or land, there are restrictions on owning businesses, I think there are also rules about obtaining and where you use your post-secondary education.

The natives I know who are successful, have done so by being off-reserve.

Definitely calling bull on this hunger strike now. I have done a couple crash weight loss programs, and pulled that off in a month on a 1000 calorie/day diet combined with light exercise.

Either this woman has the slowest metabolism on the planet, or she is a cheating cheater.

If there was ever a biased reporting service that would be one. I don't believe that she's lost pound 1.

If she wants to prove it, take off the parka and the blankets and prove that you've lost weight.

She's still the tubby 3 chinned jello belly that she was nearly a month ago.

Has she been arrested yet?

Also even though it's been suggested that the REAL idle no more movement is distancing themselves from her and others - they aren't doing a good job, Cheat Spence is still getting all the attention.

Also you can certainly find fault in the current goverment and previous, but they are always the first one to get blamed - time to go after the real culprits.

Direct talks between Prime Minister Stephen Harper and first nations leaders are near collapse before they have even begun.A chief whose hunger strike has made her a hero of the native protest movement urged fellow chiefs on Wednesday to join her in a boycott of the event.
Quote:
Theresa Spence, the Chief of Attawapiskat who has gone without all food but fish broth and herbal tea for more than four weeks to back her demand for the meeting, arrived mid-afternoon and was greeted with a standing ovation.Ms. Spence had promised to end her hunger strike if the meeting was scheduled. Then she said she wanted positive results from it before she would eat again. On Wednesday, she said she would not go and urged the other chiefs to do the same because her demand that Governor-General David Johnston attend would not be met.

This is getting absolutely ######ed. The Natives are not doing themselves any favors by siding with Spence.

The Prime Minister should basically come out and say, if you don't want to have a meeting with me fine, then don't show, more cookies for me.

I can't believe how blind people can be.

This is an ideal, if not necessary time, for another native leader to step up and seize the reins, salvaging an important discussion that is long overdue.

Spence needs to recede into the background as quickly as possible, but that won't be enough without the emergence of another strong (and more reasonable and noble) voice, if some of the serious issues facing Canada's aboriginal population are going to be addressed.

Hopefully someone capable will see the opportunity in the ashes of Spence's campaign before the whole thing blows up Occupy-style.
