Many may disagree with us (I agree with you) trading a prospect for a proven commodity, and maybe righfully so, but I'd really like to see him succeed in the NHL as a Flame.

it might sound drastic, but if the Flames decide to trade Johnny at some point before he even turns pro, I might have to take a break from the Flames.

While we haven't seen a great deal of it in this tourney, I watched quite a bit of the frozen four and I can tell you he was constantly stripping people of the puck in the defensive and neutral zones - in a very Datsyukian fashion. He is definitely of little use as a crash and banger along the boards, however his puck pursuit and quick hands allow him to be quite tenacious at puck retrieval.

I think any notion that he is a defensive liability (not saying you implied that) is misplaced.

As for his size - the only thing he needs to worry about is continuing to build his leg strength (similar to St Louis) in order to be stronger on the puck. If he can do that, his hockey IQ and soft hands are definitely NHL-worthy, possibly even star-worthy.

In their gold medal game I saw Johnny take the puck off a Swede with his fast hands but the Swede took it right back by muscling Gaudreau off the puck. I thought this was a good snapshot of where he is right now. Great potential though and very willing to give it his all.

One other thing, I don't think he'll have much to prove by doing another year in College. He should turn pro this summer and maybe spend a year in the A if he needs it.

Weisbrod indicated that Gaudreau could probably turn pro now, but he was short in stating that he meant the NHL, so you may be right.

I wouldn't mind him staying another year at B.C. for the simple fact that he has another year to grow or at least get stronger playing a college schedule. But if the Flames truly feel his (small) size won't be too much of a negative factor, and if Johnny feels ready to turn pro, then maybe a year in the AHL would be great...He would also get a few call-up games as well, if not more games than a few. (Really, depending who the Flames keep at the end of this year, could also be a determining factor of what is done with Johnny.)

At the very least, maybe more fans would come to Abby games if he's in the line-up.

The only pieces I would trade for Gaudreau are Seguin or Hamilton. If Gaudreau can make the show and produce like Krejci, that's great, but I would rather see him do that in Flames silks.

The contract is not going anywhere, he is going to get the pretty much the same contract if he signs today compared to 2 years from now.

It's a choice of wanting to wait 1 or 2 years where he has a better chance to jump into the NHL right away and make millions of dollars while enjoying being big man on campus with a relatively relaxed college schedule.

OR he could sign right now, go to Abbotsford and play for $80k/year.

I know that's a morbid line of thinking, but I'm a worrier, and I know that's what I'd be thinking about if I was Gaudreau.

In that case, he is better off finishing his college degree while he has the full ride scholarship.

All these comparisons for Johnny Hockey, how about a slightly smaller version of Claude Giroux?

He's smoother than Giroux.

Giroux has great hands, but he's a more physical player than Graudreau will ever be.

I still think the best comparison in playing style would be Kane. His ability to shift back and forth laterally is amazing.

That toe drag he did against the Canadian defensemen is typical Kane.
