Currently, the Flames have just under $48 million in cap hit committed for 2013-14 (on 14 contracts), and the only big money contract that's expiring is Iginla's.
Baertschi and Horak (and possibly Reinhart) will fill some of the openings with sub-million dollar cap hits (the performance bonus cushion will return with the new CBA).
Wotherspoon and Ramage both have potential to make the lineup as the 7th d-man.
I think Stajan is the perfect trade-bait for a team like Phoenix that has cash flow problems. A trade for Stajan would be acquiring a $2.5 million player and $1 million in cap space that you don't actually need to pay anyone. I'd say that Stajan for $2.5 million is a better value than Moss at $2.1 million.
With the new CBA likely containing a clause that will allow a team to keep a percentage of a traded player's salary and cap hit, Bouwmeester also likely has a lot of trade potential.

Ufa's, Iggy, Comeau, Babchuk, Karlsson, Cervenka.
Is there really a need to use the buyout for the Flames? Not really IMO, just a chance to rid themselves of a terrible contract like Stajan's (even though he will only have one year left).
It would be interesting to see which players would be bought out from other teams. Like Lecavalier, Luongo, Kovalchuk, and any other ridiculous contract.

Sign Iglina for 7M and Baertschi at 1.4 and Chris Butler at 2 that leaves 4.6 M to fill in 6 spots. Already counting Jones, Jackman and Derek Smith as guys under 1M. 9 players on the team making 1 M or less ?????
Either Butler or Brodie will be too expensive at 2M/yr
That is why, IMHO, someone making 4M + will be gone.
Pretty sure the Flyers, Canucks, Rangers.. etc.. Rangers are worse as their buy out almost has to be Redden or his 6.5 M willcount against their cap.

They were signed under a 70M cap. It goes down 15% just makes sense they are at least 15% overpaid.

I dont think so, at least I hope not.
He is a 35 goal, 75 point player now.
I'd hope the most they sign him for is 6 mill.

Tell that to the guys that think teams would be lining up to take Bouwmeester for a year plus at 6.7 M.

The way I read the stuff about an amnesty buyout is it would occur after the shortened season but before the 2013-14 season when the cap drops significantly.
So who gets bought out will likely depend on how guys play in the shortened season.

Probably noone, maybe Stajan.
As unpopular as it will be I'd like to see them agree to a new 3 year contract with J-Bo, somewhere in the 3.5-4M range, buy him out and then resign him. He'd be a steal at that price, He'd probably agree since he gets all the money. Would that be legal?

I doubt any team would resign a contract with JBo for 6.7.
Tolerating a overpaid year to retain his services when he resigns (for presumably much less) is a different scenario.
I wouldn't want him bought out until we at least see his performance under new coaching.
Actually i'll say the same for Stajan, but care a lot less on the outcome.

The long term ramifications of buying out Wideman or Hudler immediately after they just signed would be too great. They haven't even played a game for the Flames yet and you're writing Wideman off. Bad deal or not, Wideman isn't going anywhere.

No, you can't re-sign a player that you bought out. Otherwise, every team would do that with their highest-paid player.
If you bought out the player, then re-signed him for 1/3 of his original salary, you'd get 2/3 of his salary off your cap, but he would still take home the same money.

Jesus, your joking right? Bouw has been a nightmare for us. He doesn't score, he doesn't hit, he is an average defender at his best and beyond terrible when the pressure is on. I lol when people think at his current salary he has any trade value at all. He isn't going to get better under a new coach, he has been a choker his whole career. We only have one year left stuck with him on what I think will be a shortened season so I see no reason to buy him out, just let him walk at the end of the year.

Kinda thought there might be a rule on that. Every team wouldn't do it though because it would cost tons of money.

Well I'm not a J-bo hater, I just think he is overpaid.

^You're right. Bouw is a legit top 4 d-man who has not benefited from being played as if he was a #1. Give him a second pairing spot and play him 22 minutes and he'll be great. He's just overpaid for that role. At 4.5 under current system (less under 50-50 with lower cap) he'd be a great guy to have.

I'm just wondering with the cap potentially being so low @60m, does any bad contract have any trade value? Will a potential contending team already well over the cap really want to trade for a luongo or lecavalier? I not sold on the idea that Bouwmeester, Luongo or any other.....(elite?) contract would garner any trade value in a heavily restrictive cap like it will be at 60 million. Buying out a bad contract at that point would potentially have greater value to the organization than trying to trade for other assets with equally bad contracts . I dont think the leafs would try to trade for luongo by moving phaneuf just so they can get him under the cap is just one situation that comes to mind.

Is this one-time buyout for this season only?
If it's not, I don't want to see them buy out anyone. Everyone pretty much has one year left on their contract (except for the important players you want under contract long term). It's not as bad as we think.

I think it will be for next season. And I agree with you as I said in my first post.
