That's a sub-$500 machine with 3GB of RAM, quite typical. Hell, even Apple was shipping the low end Macbooks with 2 GB of RAM at that time, a company notoriously stingy on RAM.
Yep, you are right.

I purchased my Vista laptop, Inspiron 1501, in Jan 2008, and it was the cheapest Dell machine I could buy at the time. It came with 1GB RAM.

I realize now that the model was over a year old, so it not entirely relevant to my point. Still, it shipped with Vista.

The trend is about to break. They are already planning to release Windows Blue. It looks like it will cause a lot of resistance to change.

I must be in the minority - I had no issues with Vista Ultimate for over 2 years on a P4 system. Win 7 has treated me even better on a new system, and when I was running the developers release of Win 8 and used a program to fix the Metro UI thing, I found it even better still.

No benchmarks per se, just actual real world usage about having multiple programs open, boot up and closing times, lack of blue screens etc etc etc

One of the biggest "performance" upgrade done to windows 7 from windows vista was a reduction in the number of blocking states the ui has, so it feels smoother. This is why objective benchmarks don't show a huge difference, but an average person sitting down will definitely feel a difference.

Vista wasn't bad, but was shipped on a lot of cheap junk.

8 isn't bad either. How often do you have your start menu open in 7? Thats how often I have my start screen open in 8. A whole .001% of my time. Meanwhile, I can still press the Windows key, start typing in the name of the app I want to start, and press enter, which is all I would want.
