I've read in a few articles that (and I think is protocol in many schools) in order to get into the school, a visitor has to be buzzed in. Obviously they knew who he was to let him in, because it doesn't sound like he forced his way in.

Massacres? or intentional homicides?
Russia's intentional homicide rate is 14.18 per 100,000 people (The US' is 5.22 per 100,000). As far as straight up massacres (or rampages) of this size, I'm not sure. According to the link Cowperson posted a page back, there have been six of about this size in the last 15 years. Nowhere near the States' track record.

I'm watching a briefing from what I think is Newtown's police chief, and they're actually not releasing his name yet (the shooter). He said they can't say for sure at this time.

How was it acceptable for the media to release the name of the killer if they weren't 100% sure of it?

It is his brother.
Can't believe how messed up Ryan Lanza must feel. You go from the world hating you thinking you are a mass murderer, to finding out your brother killed your mom, dad, other brother, 20 children, 5 adults and then himself.

It isn't acceptable. Doesn't mean that every news outlet doesn't want to be the first to break the news with a name, even if it is wrong.

If news reports are correct, his mother was among his victims, and worked at the school, so I imagine that they thought they knew him...

That being said if an officer did tell a member of the media the wrong name of a shooter here in Canada they would probably get canned. You just don't go spewing that stuff, that is for the really big cheese to say to the media via a press conference. The repercussions are huge if the brother decides to sue.

It's easier for someone to buy a gun than to get mental health treatment in the U.S.
http://thinkprogress.org/health/2012...ces/?mobile=nc
Quote:
Most murders committed in the United States involve a firearm — particularly handguns. A quick search shows that a typical handgun can be purchased for anywhere between $250 and $500. A .223-caliber semi-automatic rifle — which some reports indicate was the type of firearm used in today’s attack — costs between $700 and $2000. And contrary to the gun lobby’s most ardent hysteria about Barack Obama, gun ownership has actually been rising over the past four years, as has the use of guns in violent crimes.
By comparison, access to mental health services remains spotty, its funding and beneficiary requirements subject to the whims of governments attempting to balance their bloated budgets. People often do not know when they are entitled to preventative care services for mental health, and the people who do often forgo care due to the stigma associated with receiving such care.
And then there’s the cost of more extensive care. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), a mere 7.1 percent of all American adults receive mental health services. Most of these Americans’ care is covered by private insurance, with children, poorer, and more elderly Americans being covered through public insurance programs such as Medicare and Medicaid. An additional ten percent are uninsured. But out-of-pocket costs for both inpatient and outpatient mental health services remain staggeringly high

I wonder if the brother who shot everyone had the ID of his brother. So when the police checked the records Ryan checked in, not Adam, leading them to believe he was the shooter?

Possibly but it was still a pretty big screw up to tell that to the media. The actual Ryan Lanza has been slandered and attacked after his FB profile got dragged on the air.

Ya I wasn't saying it was right for them to release the name or anything but maybe that's why the confusion/wrong name. And this is nothing more than my theory for the confusion, who knows why the name was wrong. I've never understood why we (or should I say the news?) are so fascinated by who committed the crime, instead of the victims involved. But I guess that's the nosey nature of humans today.

If I hear one more person refer to this as an 'isolated incident' and it's why nothing should be done....
Feck that #####e all to hell and back. These are no longer isolated incidents. Pull yer head outta yer bum and smell the fresh air.

From the NY Post article:
Quote:
The shooter was found with an ID that bore his brother’s name, a law-enforcement source said, but there is no indication that it was stolen. A source told The Post Ryan has told investigators he last saw Adam in 2010 and that Adam is autistic.

Interesting if the last sentence is true...
