So would a lot of other people here in N. America.
This, however, is an option in Europe. The standard engine is the 2.8L four cylinder Turbo Diesel.

Just don't understand why they don't offer it here.

I would like to know how well VW does with their TDi line-up, I seem to see quite a few of them. I would think there are few vehicles that offering a diesel option is a no brainer, but what do I know.

My understanding is the new 3.6L V6 283 hp 260 lb-ft torque engine mated with the new 5 spd auto or 6 spd manual tranny gives it a lot more pep.

Yeah, the new Pentastar definitely helps, but the Wrangler is never going to have a a great "ride"...it's main purpose is to go off-road and it's hard to make a vehicle that does both well. People who buy them and spend 95% of their time driving it on asphalt bought the wrong car. The thing is though, there are literally dozens of CUV/SUV's out there for you if you just want something that is all cladded up to look tough, but will be driven on the street.

As for the Wrangler, I'm glad that there is still a good affordable options for guys who use their trucks for primarily off-roading.

I would say that if you want a Wrangler with a good ride, the 4 door Sahara is the one to buy.

I used to own one, kept it for about a year before I got into the Germans.

For years it was because our diesel was much higher sulfur than Europe, so running a European engine here would nuke it's several thousand dollar emissions systems rather quickly. They actually had to produce different power trains for the North American bound vehicles.

Ultra-low-sulfur diesel became standard in North America just a couple years ago. Now we wait for car manufacturers to test the water and see if people like them here. Mercedes already brought over a bunch, and it sounds like Audi is next. Their 6 cylinder TDI will be available in many models across the range.

I own one with the 3.6 and it is a substantial improvement in pickup speed. As for it driving like a tank, it is by no means a rolls royce, but common.... How brutal are you at driving manual???

If it was up to me, all we would carry is TDI's. It is our number one selling engine, and our sales figures reflect it. Sometimes I wonder what the heck VW's strategy is. We already sell about 25-30 Tiguan's a month, and if we dumped the 2.0 TDI in it, we would EASILY double that figure. Every second customer asks if we can get them a TDI Tiguan. And the biggest reason people pass on it, is because of the lack of a Diesel engine.

The problem is that the US has not jumped on the TDI bandwagon like Canadians have....yet. And our allocation is directly linked with what the US market will bear even though VW Canada and USA are run as separate entities even when Canadians have very European'esque tastes in cars. Small, fuel efficient, and usually foreign rules the roost here. Americans just can't seem to kick the "There is no substitute for cubic inches" land yacht habit.

On a side note, I am still waiting for the elusive low mileage, rust free, never left pavement sub-$5000 97-06 TJ 5 spd to roll onto our lot to turn into a weekend warrior mobile. I just love the no-nonsense aspect of them, and I have always had a soft spot for them regardless of my domestic SUV hatred. They are the one exception.
