Anyone with a tire pressure management system gotten wheels/tires from somewhere other than the dealer? $400 for a set was a bit of a kick in the junk and wondering if there are alternatives.

I got Nokians from KalTire on my Murano which has TPMS and haven't had an issue.

I've read Mitsubishi's will warn you that TPMS is not enabled which consists of an alert sound every time you start the car. I think that would get annoying.

I think the Murano does that too, but they transferred over the TPMS so it still works.

As far as winter tires go, I don't use them anymore. Tried them for a few years and the difference was basically negligible on city roads. Sorry, but I totally disagree with this statement. It's like night and day difference. I've seen countless people struggle up even slight hills in winter because they don't have the right tires. Me in my little civic just drive past these guys while they are spinning their tires in their fancy SUVs.

My EVO X did that and yes it got annoying. Now I just get TPMS installed with my winter tires and have the dealer switch it over the sensors.

Fords are great in this regard as you can buy the TPMS tool for $50 and program new sensors yourself. Super easy and I wish the Japanese manufacturers would follow suit as I feel it's kind of BS to be charged by a dealer for a simple 10 minute procedure every change in season.

I was looking to do a full winter tire and wheel set instead of transferring tires to the existing wheel set which is what I suspect you did.

Ah I see yeah I got the WR G2 SUV ones so I didn't have to switch back and forth.

Winter sure hit in Edmonton. I'm glad I had my winter tires on. I drive a small car so it's easy for it to get stuck in winter. I used to get stuck every time I hit a patch of snow deeper than 5 inches. Now I plow right through that like it's nothing. I mainly got it for that reason... but snow tires are seriously understated how well they are. I even have some old Blizzard WR-50's.

Ah yes, the ol' "all seasons are as good as winters as long as you adjust your driving to the conditions". Why force yourself to do that when it's less of an adjustment if using winters? Of course if we adjust any type of driving to the conditions (ie slow down enough), there won't be a difference on any tire in any condition. Might as well use shopping cart wheels. Then people wonder why traffic is so stupidly slow after a snowfall that it makes no logical sense. I guess it's those people adjusting to the conditions, spinning tires and having a jolly good time with their gas consumption spoiling it for the people that like to plan accordingly.

Never had winter tires before, but tomorrow I'm getting them and studded too. If you see a guy going 120 through the snow covered ditch on the deerfoot that's me.

Everyone who's posting in this thread who has winter tires isn't dead, that's evidence enough for me!

I got the studded Federal Himalaya WS2's from tirebob at UrbanX. His recommendation over the blizzak ws70s at value/cost. I drive a quattro A4.

Oh. Man.

I used to be in the "all-seasons are fine as long as you drive way more carefully" crowd.

No. NO. WRONG! These tires are a revelation. My traction control system didn't engage once. Anti-lock brakes were not needed. I cruised over ice and snow this AM like the car had been designed for such conditions and needed them for ultimate performance.

I will miss powersliding in the parking lots, but there is no going back.

People who say that usually are just too cheap to spend the money. If winters tires are not needed for Calgary winters then where are they needed? Have you looked outside today?

Except the cost is marginally more... you can only have 4 tires on your car at a time which means one set is sitting in the garage not wearing out.

Yes winters are slightly more expensive and you have the cost of a second set of wheels. Easily less than a $500 one time cost.

Not to mention they pay for themselves potentially many times over if they save you from one accident.

I didn't know your precious office hands couldn't handle a 20-30 minute tire swap twice a year.

Really glad to hear this, I got the same tires and am picking them up from UrbanX tomorrow. Can't wait to try them out.
