Default Calgary Zeller's employee chases down shoplifter; Fights away knife

She's pretty bad ass, but damn she doesn't get paid enough to be risking her life like that.

http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/cr...890/story.html

Quote:
Around 5 p.m. Sunday, police were alerted to a shoplifting incident at the Zellers in Sunridge Mall. As the suspect was fleeing the store, a female Zellers employee tried to stop the man, according to duty inspector Paul Stacey.
She chased him to his car and got inside. Then the suspect pulled a knife on her. A fight broke out and she was able to toss the knife from the window, but the man fled with her still inside.

That's a poor way to use your 15 min coffee break.

For the amount they get paid, I'd probably help the shop lifter load his truck

He didn't know he had a target on his back.

Edit: But seriously what could someone steal from a zellers that would be worth breaking out into a brisk jog over, let alone getting into a fight.... are old electronics and discontinued z-brand hairspray really that valuable.

Elephant in the room, so I'll just come out and say it.

Zellers is shutting down.

This woman is an idiot. And that is me putting it mildly. What the hell is so valuable from a Zellers that you feel you need to risk your life over?

People need to realize life is not a movie. All it would have taken is one swipe of that knife and this story ends with her bleeding to death in a parking lot. And for what? Liquidated merchandise that isnt even yours?

Dont be a hero people, its not worth it. Not for anything. This is what the police are trained to deal with. Let them handle it.

as awesome as this story sounds, i have to agree.

If they dont fire her, it's only going to encourage more "Heroes" who are just going to get hurt over cheap merchandise

This was a crazy story. She should be in charge of security, not a check-out person!

Was pretty dangerous, almost made me wonder if there was some work reason why she might have done it. IE Zellers is so cheap they deduct the pay of anyone who loses merchandise.

In two weeks she will be laid off and yet she chases down a shoftlifter. This has to be one of the dumbest people ever. This is not heroic at all just stupid.

BTW she is very lucky she did not get fired. A lot of businesses have a very strict no chase policy.

I worked at the Sunglass Hut in Chinook mall, a long time ago. This was before all the major renovations in Chinook. We were next to The Bay, across from Jewels by Maxine, or however it's spelled.

Straight down the hall from us was one of the east entrances. So I could see down the hall who was entering or existing the mall.

One night I saw a lady walk in and she had something in her hand. Clutching it very hard. She got closer and closer and finally entered the store. She a credit card in hand. Now...who walks around with their credit card in hand, like that? No purse or wallet. Just her and a credit card.

She asked to see, and I quote, "the most expensive sunglasses you have." At the time, those were a pair of Revo sunglasses. I showed her and she tried them on. She then asked to buy them, and handed me the card. The entire time she seemed nervous and was sweating a little.

I was on my own. No one else in the store. This lady had already raised a bunch of red flags for me, so I asked for ID. She didn't have any. So I told her that I would need to call in the credit card. Instead of calling Visa, I called security, and acted like I was on the phone with Visa.

She darted out the store and was running down the hall towards the exit. I took off after her, and told the person at the t-shirt cart next to our store to watch the store. I followed her outside, and watched her get into a white pontiac grand am, and copied down the licence plate number.

It all happened so fast.

Two weeks later I got a reward gift card in the mail, from Visa, for recovering the stollen card.

A week after that I was fired for "abandoning" my store. Nevermind the fact that I prevented theft and fraud.

Would I do it again? Probably. Don't know why I did in the first place. I just did.
