Good weekends from Gaudreau, Arnold, and Gillies. Pretty mediocre everywhere else, though.

I don't think any other team has more prevalence in the NCAA than the Flames.

I'm starting to get worried because of Brossoit ... certainly not a good start to his season so far. He's obviously getting outperformed by the 17-year-old backup right now.

I haven't watched any Oil Kings games other than the one game against the Hitmen that was on Sportsnet (and Brossoit did look bad in that game).

Has Brossoit really been getting outplayed by the kid, or has the kid just been getting easier opponents? Even though his stats aren't spectacular, he has still started two-thirds of Edmonton's games, and only has 1 regulation loss.

I don't think the environment in Edmonton is good for him. He's got zero confidence right now. He needs to go to a team that really needs a goalie, like Moose Jaw.

Tristan Jarry has started one of five games against a top 10 team in terms of point pecentage at this point in the WHL season. He is averaging 23.2 shots against per game.

Laurent Brossoit has started five of his ten games against a top 10 team in terms of point percentage at this point in the WHL season. He is averaging 27.3 shots against per game.

Its tough to say if he has been out played by Jarry, but he certainly needs to step it up either way. He is however getting his team points which is the most important thing.

Tristian has earned his team 6 out of a possible 10 points (0.60)
Brossoit has earned his team 15 out of a possible 20 points (0.75)

Discouraging individual statistics nevertheless.

Brossoit is playing himself off Team Canada right now, shame to see.

A shame, yes, but not at all that unusual. It seems to me that 18–20-year-old goalies drafted out of the CHL will quite frequently gravitate between hot and cold, even for significant portions of a season or two.

Just of the top of my head, Flames prospects Brent Krahn, Matt Keetley, and Leland Irving all experienced similar such fluctuations in their Juniour and early pro statistics. We can only hope that Brossoit is more Irving than Keetley at this point.

Wonder if the Blades and Oil Kings will do a goaltender swap - Both Brossoit and Makarov seem to be struggling at the moment, despite being highlights of their team last year.

Brossoit:
vs Kootenay (21st in WHL)
vs Red Deer (tied for 8th in WHL)
vs Calgary (tied for 6th in WHL)
vs Saskatoon (20th in WHL)
at Calgary (tied for 6th in WHL)
at Medicine Hat (tied for 11th in WHL)
vs Calgary (tied for 6th in WHL)
vs Kamloops (1st in WHL)
vs Medicine Hat (tied for 11th in WHL)
vs Kelowna (tied for 8th in WHL)

Jarry:
at Lethbridge (tied for 11th in WHL)
vs Prince Albert (tied for 3rd in WHL)
at Kootenay (21st in WHL)
vs Moose Jaw (tied for 11th in WHL)
vs Vancouver (22nd in WHL)

Brossoit has undoubtedly faced tougher opponents, but that is to be expected ... Jarry has only seen one of the better teams (Prince Albert), while otherwise facing middle-of-the-pack teams (Lethbridge, Moose Jaw) and two bottom-feeders (Kootenay and Vancouver). Brossoit has played against the almighty Blazers and a few other good teams so far and saw two bottom-feeders (Kootenay and Saskatoon). It should also be noted that the Oil Kings have just played four games away from home. Both Brossoit and Jarry have played the second game of a back-to-back once.

Maybe the Oil Kings defense has an impact on his game, too. After all, they have lost Pysyk and Gernat, that's not easy to overcome.

Time will tell ... so far, it hasn't been spectacular for Brossoit. I remember him saying in an interview during the prospect camp that he aims to be at or near the top of every goaltender statistics, so he can't be too happy himself. Maybe he will run hot at some point again soon, but ever since the Memorial Cup, he doesn't seem to be up to his game. Maybe he could need a change of scenery. Don't want him in that city up there anyway

Very good numbers to start the year for Jon Gillies, Coda Gordon and Ryan Culkin.

Gillies was named Hockey East's Rookie of the Week again. That's three straight weeks:

For the third consecutive week, men's hockey freshman goaltender Jon Gillies (South Portland, Maine) has earned a weekly Hockey East award. On Monday, the conference announced that Gillies was selected as the Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week.

I was at the game on Saturday and have seen Brossoit 4-5 times already. Definetly doesn't look as confident in the net right now. Last couple games I've seen he has given up a goal on the first or second shot which seems to be throwing him off. He has had a few unfortunate bounces too that haven't gone his way. His play is concerning, but I wouldn't say I'm worried yet. IIRC he got off to a slow start last season as well. Hopefully he can have a few solid games and get some confidence back in his game. Just really unfortunate he is having the start he is having as I'm sure Hockey Canada is watching him pretty closely.

Subban is putting up good numbers, but Lagacé's stats (4.51 GAA, 0.851 SV% and a 4-4-1 record in 9 games played) are even worse than Brossoit's.

Since they were the 3 goalies on Team Canada in the Canada-Russia challenge, they're the likely candidates for the World Jrs.

A small blurb on Horak on CBC this afternoon:

http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/opin...bbotsford.html

Quote:
Horak was a Rangers fifth-round pick in 2009. He popped up on the Flames radar screen every time then Calgary director of player personnel Duane Sutter or special assistant to the GM Craig Conroy checked in on Flames prospect Ryan Howse with the Chilliwack Bruins. Horak and Howse played on the same line and it was hard not to notice their chemistry and Horak's play.

"[Horak] was a good all-around player who lacked strength, so we thought with time to develop physically he could turn into an NHL prospect," Flames director of amateur scouting Tod Button said. "His hockey sense and work ethic were his best attributes."

don't think it was mentioned: the Utah Grizzlies won 5-4 in the shootout against Idaho this weekend. Bryan Cameron had 1 goal and 2 assists to get 1st star honours, Ryan Howse also scored 1 goal. James Martin and Mitch Wahl had 1 assist each. Gaelan Patterson was scoreless. Howse scored the game-winning penalty in the shootout.

Bryan Cameron has 5 points (1+4) in 6 games
Mitch Wahl has 5 points (1+4) in 6 games
James Martin has 4 points (0+4) in 6 games
Gaelan Patterson has 3 points (0+3) in 6 games
Ryan Howse has 1 point (1+0) in 4 games

BTW, I was shocked to see that Brandon Dubinsky is playing in the ECHL during the lockout. Didn't think an NHL player like him would go to such a "small" league. Not too surprising he's tied for the league lead in goals ... oh, and former Heat players/tryouts Justin Dowling and Kael Mouillierat, both playing for Idaho, are among the top 5 point scorers in the league.

I thought Brossoit played too much through the spring and summer, going from team to team and camp to camp. He had been on a roll and wanted to keep it going, as well as to showcase himself for the WJ team.

All very understandable. However, it was inevitable that he would tire out. And once tired and not playing as well, the confidence was sure to wane as well.

I am not at all worried, however. Goalies ebb and flow and he will get his confidence back.

The only worry is whether he gets it back in time to make the Junior team.

On that same note, Gillies is really giving himself a chance for the US team. He has been solid and people are taking notice.

After 4 home games the Heat are in the middle for attendance at 5043/game.

Two of those games were against the Baby Canucks. Average is skewed up.
