Usually to give them a fresh start. When we give them a second chance the hope is that they change the things they were doing wrong and everyone can get on with thier lives. Unfortunately when some posters get a second chance they blow it and cause drama like you see in this thread.

In my opinion, this constant witch hunt for returning posters is tedious and annoying. Things would go smoother around here if posters just reported bad posts and moved on. For example, if polak is a returning poster so what? He/she has 500ish posts and not a single infraction to date...so where is the problem? And to be clear, I'm not saying polak is a returning poster.

Unknown yet. The last username he had was Austin Powers which got banned a week ago.

Yeah, we realize the report a post method has a disconnect between the report and the action but we just dont have the time to follow up on the reported post and then follow up with the person that reported the post. Posters just have to trust that we taking care of the reported posts - which we are. Other than at night, every reported post is read by a MOD at most within an hour of being reported.

A little OT for the thread, but in line with your post, but is there a mechanism in place to address over zealous reporters of posts? Is there a flow back when posts are reported, but those posts are not truely reportable posts.

When the mods allow a previously-banned poster to come back, it's to give them a chance to rectify whatever behavior it was that got them banned in the first place. If the mods were to allow the poster to have their old name back, it would all but guarantee that the whole exercise was nothing but a waste of time.

I suspect the majority of the posters on this site are like me: blissfully ignorant of who's returning as whom, and what they did to get banned in the first place. There are quite a few posters of the opposite ilk, however, and they like to cling to drama as if it were made out of Super Glue. These posters are the biggest reason why it's necessary for returning posters to have new names.

Well I think returning posters are a little unsure of what they can and cannot say with respect to any previous accounts. I mean, they've been let back onto the forum and the last thing any returning poster that truly wants to stay would want to do is sabotage that by blabbing about accounts/behaviour that got them banned in the first place.

It's super weird how you care so much about returning posters. What's wrong with Iginla? What's wrong with Cecil? Both guys get carried away, but they're definitely not trolls and they try to be contributive IMO.

I also enjoy figuring out who's who. Some people like politics, some people like Apple, some people like noticing similarities and figuring stuff out.

Soooo.... Speaking of similarities, jamoro seriously reminds me of that guy who bought pop at the liquor store. Can't remember the poster's name.

There has to have been more than that, though, right? Maybe some posts were deleted or he sent some belligerent PMs, but I don't see what he did wrong in that thread other than argue about a gear grinder like half the people do in that thread (other than the fact that a moderator was the one arguing with him).
