Hopefully with Culkin and Kulik, the Flames have just drafted a couple more "TJ Brodie's"
From all descriptions I've read, very similar playing styles, body sizes etc.

Both also put up very similar numbers to TJ in their draft years.

I thought it was pretty interesting what Weisbrod said in regards to Kulak. He said that when the 4th round pick came along, they discussed who they should pick between Kulak and Culkin because the other one won't be around in the next round.
Turns out they got them both.

I wonder if the Flames management were uncomfortable with those horseshoes up their asses this weekend. First, hearing that IF Jankowski wasn't there they were going take Sieloff. They end up getting both. And then the Kulak/Culkin dilemma, and end up getting both.

 Good stuff.

They did sign two undrafted guys out of the OHL two years ago, in Breen and Cameron.

Looks like Culkin tied for first on the VO2max with 65.7. Baertschi was top last year!

That's 2 goals and 8 assists for him in 8 games. He currently leads all defenceman in the QMJHL in points.

Not to slight the kid in any way, but those Ramparts are absolutely destroying the Q right now. Grigorenko is handing other teams their arses. I hope I got that right (that they play ob the same team)

Ryan Culkin getting praises from one of the best NHL defenseman.http://www.lapresse.ca/le-soleil/spo...8_section_POS1

		| Letang sees himself in Culkin
Ranked second in points among QMJHL defensemen, Ryan Culkin has a tremendous season so far with the Remparts. Just yesterday, the 18 years old dazzled on several defensive plays at Centre Robert-Guertin.

For the 18 years old Montrealer, known for his hard work in the gym, everything starts with preparation. That’s how he relates to his mentor - and Summer training partner - Kristopher Letang.

Present in Quebec on Thursday for a charity hockey game, the Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman was full of praises for the #7 of the Remparts. According to him, the Flames’ prospect (fifth round in 2012) has the kind of determination needed to pursue a professional career.

"First, this is a guy who has super good values. This is a guy who is hard at work. I've never seen him loosen in his work. We gave him difficult things to do and he always kept a good attitude. I'm not surprised he has success here in Quebec, "suggested the teammate of Sidney Crosby.

Letang goes further, claiming to see himself in Culkin, a young man with an offensive flair and a similar physic, equally as devoted to his sport.

"When I see a young person like me, who is diligent in training, who is there every day, who does not waste his time, I see a certain part of myself in him. I think it's good, I want to help and try to give them tools ... And he is a good kid! "said the #58 of the Penguins with a smile.

Central part of the best defensive corp in the QMJHL (16 goals allowed before yesterday's game), Culkin does not want to credit himself for his good start to the season, preferring to talk about "the team."

"Now, what we want is to continue to grow and have a good record. The guys are working hard. And we hope it will continue like that! "he said.

Obviously it's early and it's a small sample size so far, but 11 points in 9 games is impressive - even on a stacked team like Quebec. The other topscoring d-men in the Q are older than him, most of them (Abeltshauser, Brisebois) were born in 92. I heard he's more a defensive d-man, so seeing him put up points like that was surprising. Good to see him wear an "A", too. I remember Ward praising him in camp, hopefully he continues to develop in the right direction.

Just noticed that the QMJHL is playing Russia in the Subway Super Series, and that Ryan Culkin is on the team.
They are playing tonight at 5:00, in about 2 mins!

other than this that was originally posted in the Backburner forum? no. Adirondack tends to be tight lipped about injuries.http://poststar.com/blogs/flames/rya...4a5c705ef.html

		| Ryan Culkin can wiggle his fingers but a big, bulky cast immobilizes his thumb.
The Adirondack Flames defenseman was cut with a skate early in the second period on Friday night. He immediately threw down his gloves and stick and made a bee-line to the dressing room (it happened just in front of the door), leaving the assistant equipment manager to call for the trainer.

Culkin tore a tendon, possibly multiple tendons in his left wrist. He could see them engaging as he moved his hand.

Teammates got off the ice from morning skate on Saturday and checked in with him, each getting the gory details. Trevor Gillies compared war stories with Culkin, showing him the scar from a similar injury. He watched Culkin move his fingers and said "oh you'll get that back" (meaning full range of motion).

The 21-year-old was taken to the emergency room during the game Friday night. He will undergo surgery on Tuesday to repair the damage and will be out for an extended time.
