^ but it's only a plug.... how much of a factor would that be for someone wanting to buy a cellphone?
Great to note, APPL down $10 since Oilyfan's comment. hehe

It isn't the only factor of course, but that kind of attention to detail is what separates the top companies from the others, or what creates the kind of loyalty Apple has in the industry.
When designing an app or website, we try to think that way. "How can I do this in less clicks, do I need this setting, how can I make this interface interesting to use, etc".

My cell phone from 4 years ago has the same microusb plug. even though the phone is obsolete, i still use the microusb cable at work to charge my phone. This cable from 4 years ago does exactly the same thing as what lightning cable does, which does the same thing the 3g cable did. Why didn't Apple just come out with a microusb cable to begin with? Sure its' great for business but really crappy for the consumer.

It's also a blatant cash grab. Sure it's reversible, but adapters and cables created for the lightning plug are marked up at a 800%+ margin. Everyone HAS to re-buy all of their accessories.
Though I suppose advantage is if you break the connector you aren't possibly going to hoop your device.

You are just as insufferable as any apple "fanboy" I have ever met.
It is okay that other people have made different choices than you. Nobody thinks you're clever because of your incessant need to criticize Apple at every mention.

Umm dude how am i wrong? I know that there are no USB 3.0 ports on the new android, but the Oilyfan was saying talking up this new lightning cable like it was God. Fact is that cable does the same cables from 6-7 years ago did. It's USB 2.0.
Clever? hahaha. well my old obsolete phone cable from 4 years ago can still charge my brand new phone. and it does the same thing as the lightning cable...
Pretty ridiculous eh? haha

You do know that the apple dock connectors do more than what a micro usb connector is capable of right?
Since you want to make simplistic arguments about complex issues I will break it down for you. The micro usb connector uses a 5 pin connection, whereas the Lightning connector uses 8 pins. Apple wants to carry video, audio, charging and data syncing over one cable. The micro usb is not capable of doing all of this, so you would have to add another port, probably a mini HDMI, which most Android products do. Apple decides that instead of that they will design a proprietary cable so you don't have to buy two cables to accomplish the task the Lightning cable can with one.
Also the micro USB is incapable of carrying the kind of current required to charge an iPad

The answer to that is already in the posts I've made. You may not agree, but don't just ignore the points.

With a different connector that's easier to insert than micro usb. That's the point that you are missing, that minor a usability issue is nothing to some people, important to others, some companies don't care, some obsess about details like that.
That's why there's a market place full of devices rather than just one.

haha TOO bad you have to rebuy all your cables again since all your old ones are completely obsolete. hehe
Does it charge your phone faster? That would be pretty good.
Isn't this design kind of archaic when hardly anyone would stream video from their
phone to their tv? Doesn't apple have a program that does it wirelessly? With my S3 I can send it via Allshare.
Hmmm a microusb cable can charge a google tablet. Whats wrong with the ipad. hehe

yes you can airplay to an appletv but not everyone has one. some people want video out (and as this connector will be standard, on iPad and such) having video/audio out is great out of 1 port.

So maybe Apple will do that right thing and make Lightning an open standard so we can all switch to it and get along and buy $3 Monoprice charging cables? Yeah... nuts. I really do like the idea of a reversible USB cable.
Doesn't the EU mandate micro-USB? I wonder how Apple gets around that, unless that was just an urban legend. It just made sense that phone OEMs wouldn't have switched away from their profitable "You need a new car charger for every new phone" scheme unless forced to.

I don't even know if lightning to HDMI is released yet?
"An Apple spokesperson told The Verge that Lightning to HDMI and Lightning to VGA cables "will be available in the coming months.""

The EU does mandate it, but anyone can get around that mandate by making an adapter available.

In the EU a lightning to micro-usb adapter is available

Sorry i just can't my head wrapped around a plug can be so innovative and important. On the other end its' still a usb head right? It's still going to take someone time to plug and flip and plug again. hehe I mean if it was thunderbolt capable that would be something.

I think you're missing his point.
It is not that the lightning plug is innovative and important, it's that it's a minor detail that is convenient. I personally like the lightning cable. I never owned an iPhone before so I don't have to rebuy everything and for me it's fairly convenient. I can't wait until they come out with the generic brands, that way I can have three or four of them and never have to worry about fiddling with it in the dark while trying to plug it in.

ALL ABOARD!

Also, at one point do you want the switch to a new technology to occur? It's never going to be convenient for everyone.
Personally I would have been fine with them waiting till inductive charging was more advanced and incorporating that. No cables at all is the way to go but I think we're many years away from inductive charging and wireless transfers being as quick as cabled.
