I would think that the yellowish lights you are referring to are HPS or High Pressure Sodium. They are likely being changed out to MH or Metal Halide, white color,...or perhaps to LED.
I doubt they are the dark orangy color or LPS Low Pressure Sodium, those were banned (changed) years ago and I cant remember Calgary utilizing many of those if at all for street lighting.
Light pollution wasnt fought by lamp color, it was/is being fought by less fixtures, and better shrouds. The HPS has longer lamp life and better lumen output.

Just a hunch, but it since dawn to dusk are blue, it could be that orange is less disturbing to wildlife.

I like the yellow/orange tinge ones myself. But these new white ones light up more brighter...
Just make it a little more interesting city planners and go with some black lights

I have never understood why in the mid 80s we went from the white lights to the orange ones. Hopefully we are changing back.
Hate to bring you down but could that be due to the new overpass / interchange they're building there? Maybe the construction workers need more than the orange lights?

Well if white lights are that much brighter and better and safer, why not make the entire city like this?

Where is Bunk? we need to pass this idea along with the airdrie/okotoks/chestermere/cochrane toll booths to Nenshi!

I thought the lights on Stoney Trail were LEDs? The last time I was in Calgary, I thought the street lights there were much brighter than the ones we have at home. At least that's what it seemed like.

It's like your brain is liquified, fermented, then poured into a glass bottle and refrigerated. Mind bottling.

I find it mind boggling that people actually say mind bottling.

I can understand that. If my walls were white it would bother me, but my walls are sand with dark brown highlights and feature walls. The yellow lights are just too much, but the white light bouncing off them gives a nice tone to the rooms.

City is experimenting with LED streetlights, which have a whiter hue, but I don't know if this is a location they're testing.
