This guy was some nutbag for sure, but believe me, if someone wanted to go stand in front of ESB and start shooting people, you'd be able to get in way more than a handful if you really wanted. That place is packed.
I guess we'll see what happens as more news comes out. I'm just leery of everyone turning this into a Batman sequel.

There's always a part of me that gets a little uneasy in places like that, particularly the LIRR area at Penn Station, for that very reason.

So basically the story is, guy shoots his co-worker. Then he flees the scene. As he's running, he gets into a shootout with cops in busy part of NYC. Bystandards get hit?

This story has bounced all over the place in the last hour so there's obviously no way any of us could have actually known.

I had those thoughts too once in a while. That, and a nice juicy bomb going off on a packed L train when it was under the tunnel. Or getting pushed into an oncoming train. It's easy to get carried away in your head if you let it, ha.
But hey, that's the price you pay for living in NY. But honestly, I think you're much more likely to get hit by a car stepping off a curb, or have some sort of accidental death, than get caught up in that type of scenario.

I would think that public shootings that turn out to be indescriminate killings tend to make the news more often than say drug related violence or domestic violence.

As for the photo, I don't know what to say. It is disturbing and yet that is such a, not sure on the right word here, unique? photo.
With the arms outstreched, the vibrant red blood and the angle out the window from an opportunistic photographer it almost looks staged.

From a pure photography perspective, it's no doubt fantastic. World Press Photo award candidate.

For the local news sure, but the Calgary Herald sure as hell isn't covering the vast majority of incidents that occur in NYC without an additional element to draw them in. The fact this happened in a tourist dense area around a globally known building provided that tie. There have been cases of multiple people being shot this summer in parts of Brooklyn and Queens that barely even register on the local front, let alone internationally.
The fact of the matter is that people don't see a headline that says 'Shooting in 'insert poor neighborhood people haven't heard of' leaves 2 dead and 7 wounded' and stop to read. Replace that with 'Empire State Building' and people's eyes stop.
