Beaches in Alberta

A friend of mine has often said that Calgary would be a perfect city if it had a large body of water (ie. lake or ocean). I tend to agree. It's really the only thing missing from the city.

I love living near the ocean now and the beaches are amazing. However, with the ocean comes very large fish with a "bite first, ask questions later" mentality. I sure miss the mountains though.

Buffalo lake, northeast of Red Deer (2-1/2 hours from Calgary). The community of Pelican Point has a sand beach, it's not too bad. I think one of the communities on the south side of lake has sand beaches too.

There is Sikome Lake to. It isn't anything special but I remember going there a few times when I lived in Calgary.

Sikome lake is actually pretty decent now. I've biked by there a few times and looks like a decent place to hang out on a hot day without having to travel out of the city.

Also, I was at Auburn Bay a couple of weeks ago and the facility they have there is really nice. You have to go in with someone from the community, but they have a decent beach. Would have been packed this past weekend i'm sure, but nice to have.

I'm sure by international standards that man made beach is terrible, but to my Calgarian eyes, I was very envious.

If you go to Cypress Hills, Elkwater has a decent beach.

T&T: A beach is a sandy area at the edge of water. Tides just make nicer beaches, not "real" beaches. Or I guess all my years in the Okanagan, those were all "fake" beaches I enjoyed so much?

Really, We have this thing called mountains, by default, that makes our outdoors betters. The only thing we don't really have is swimmable lakes and beaches. But I will take Alpine meadows and mountains over beaches and lakes any day.

I really hope the "beach" gets built on St. Patrick's Island. Having somewhere nice to go wading near downtown on a hot day would be great. It sucks how we pretty much aren't allowed to swim in our perfectly clean river that runs right through the city.

Well yes the Rockies are scenic and gorgeous. But I can't swim in them.

As nice as they are, I'd trade the Rockies for a warm ocean in a heart-beat. I'm not really a hardcore outdoorsman and hiking kind of bores me. A nice sandy beach and large bodies of water everywhere is one of the biggest things I miss about the east coast. That and practically everyone having a pool.

The thing I miss about Sask is the heat. And with the heat comes the need for Lakes and Beaches. Calgary really only gets one week of good lake weather anyways so even if we had good lakes there wouldn;t be that much time to use them.

Well, we've had a nice summer this year. I agree the last two summers were pretty crappy. As for the past I remember warm ones and cold ones.

except the ocean is freezing. spent many a day in my youth near hypothermic while @ Cavendish or swimming in the north west arm......

Cavendish Beach might have been the coldest water I've ever entered into in July.

Not where I was. The Atlantic coast in NY/NJ is pretty warm....much more so than any part of the US Pacific coast, no matter how far south you go.
