Default Olympic GDT - 1 August

Some Canadian athletes in action today
(UK time)

For a list of every Canadian in every event, check: http://olympic.ca/canadian-schedule

09:00 Women’s Basketball Preliminary Round Group B. Canada v. France, Basketball Arena
Our women take on a strong French team ranked eighth in the world. Canada, back at the Games in women’s hoops for the first time since 2000, is currently ranked eleventh.

12:30 Men’s Eight Final, Eton Dorney
Gold medal winners in Beijing and the current world champions, the Canadian Eight broke the world-best time a couple of months ago and are going for gold today!

12:30 Women’s Cycling Individual Time Trials across London and Surrey
One of the most recognizable and respected names in Canadian sports, Clara Hughes takes part in the cycling time trials today. She will be cycling 29km on along a route that starts and finishes at Hampton Court Palace and is expected to be a strong medal prospect. Clara is one of a small, elite group of athletes who have won medals at both the Summer and Winter Olympics. She’s going for her seventh Olympic medal and is such an inspiration!

15:00 Men’s synchronised 3m Springboard Final, Aquatics Centre
Montreal’s Alexandre Despatie, one of the most successful divers ever to come out of Canada, will be performing with team mate Reuben Ross in this event which could see them take home a medal. However, they face stiff competition from the Chinese pair Wang Feng and Qin Kai, and the Americans Troy Dumais and Kristian Ipsen.

20:17 Men’s 100m Freestyle Swimming Final, Aquatic Centre
Brent Hayden, taking part in his third and final Olympic Games is hoping for a place on the podium.

What else is going on today?
Other Olympic events today include women’s pairs rowing; the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay in the pool; and table tennis.

I'm at weightlifting right now. Will try and snap some photos and post later.

The kiwi duo of Eric Murray and Hamish Bond coast to victory in the first semi-final of men's coxless pairs, crossing four lengths in front of Italy, who come in a further half-length in front of Canada. Those three will be in the final of the men's coxless pairs. Germany, USA and Holland won't.

Canada lost 64-60 to France in women's basketball. Close match against a strong team.

Canada wins Silver in 8 man Rowing with about 20 strokes left over taking the British at the end. What a final 500m for Canada.

8 badminton players, including the top seed, have been disqualified. That's what you get for trying to lose matches for a better draw. Good to see them up their foot down on this.

The Men's Eights is always a fantastic race - the crown jewel of the rowing events. Jerry had a top boat this year, unbeaten since 2009. Similar to the 2008 Canadian boat, which was unbeaten between the Athens and Beijing games.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching that, especially since Canada pipped GB to the silver. That's upset a bunch of people over here.

Well done lads!

Really? I think the correct response to players losing intentionally is to fix your damn seeding!

For future tournaments, sure, but booting them out right now was the correct thing to do.

Yes. Hopefully that's done next time around.

For London, this was the right decision.

Great call on banning those badminton players. That was so beyond disgraceful. If you're going to throw a game, at least try for a little subtlety. It was fun though hearing John McEnroe losing his mind during that match yesterday, sounded like he wanted to go out on the floor and kick some ass.

I'd actually like to see the girls gang-up and kick McEnroe's ass.

Totally agree with the banning though.

Any sport where losing gives you a better chance to win needs to take a long, hard look at itself.

You just destroyed the dreams of the Edmonton Oilers and their fans.

Well, Djokovic losing would make Raonic's loss yesterday a little more painful...

Yes it sure would. Raonic might have made the semi's if Djokovic goes out.
