The one place where you can get a good cut is Costco. I remember someone in the grocery industry told me once that they get better cuts than anyone, with the exception being first tier restaurants.
As for which steak place to go to, Chop = Moxies (literally). I don't mind The Keg but it is literally hit or miss.

In no particular order. If you go to one of these places, you'll have a great steak.

In my mind the super hot plates are a gimmick.
Create a gimmick then charge a higher price. The consumer sees the higher price and thinks they are getting better quality and something special. Millions have been tricked.

I fail to understand how hot plates would equate to a high end experience. What is their thinking behind that? I get super hot plates when I order fajitas at a run-of-the-mill Mexican restaurant...it doesn't really mean anything.

I dunno, I think that the much larger portions at Ruths Chris are the reason the prices are so much higher. The sizzling plate is pretty cool.
I,was going to give a shout out for the outback steakhouse. I love that little crust on thier steaks and as I recall they were reasonably priced. I try and make a point of stopping in when we are in th US of A

This used to be true. Sadly for the time being they no longer carry Prime grade Canadian Beef.

Hang on, what's with the "I know, I know " bit? Something wrong with Cactus Club?
The Creole Steak is probably the best bang for your buck steak anywhere. I have eaten in some of the most expensive steak houses in the world and yeah they are awesome, but for under $30, the Cactus Club rates right up there just fine.
So what am I missing about Cactus Club, is there some inside joke?

I actually had a steak at the Calgary Tower a few months ago. I can't remember the exact cut I had, but knowing my preferences, it is safe to assume it was a NY strip. I thoroughly enjoyed it; it was cooked to perfection and had a good seasoning on it that was not overpowering. I think it was between $25-$30 for an 8 oz, so fairly reasonable in my opinion.

It's the whole thing about eating steak at a place like the Cactus Club and then admitting to it on here. I see nothing wrong with it. I love the Keg for example, but it seems because it's a chain it gets a bad rap.

The Keg, dollar for dollar, is not only the best value steak in the city, it's probably the best value restaurant in the city.

There's actually two Outbacks in Edmonton if you're ever really craving it (I've never been).

And while your out treating yourself to a fancy steak dinner don't splurge and treat yourself to a "Kobe" beef steak..... Because Japanese Beef has been banned for import into North American for the last 2-3 years due to good 'ol foot and mouth disease.

Thanks for all the ideas guys. We are going as a group of 6, with my parents paying for everyone. Thats why I wanted to keep it on the more "affordable" side of things. I will show them the Vintage website, which has the menu and pricing and see if its somewhere they would like to go.

Still confused, is Cactus in the same category as Boston Pizza and Chili's or something?

Disagree, Keg along with Tony Roma's are probably 2 of the worst bang for your buck restaurants I have ever experienced.

Another vote for the Ranche at Fish Creek and the Vintage Chophouse downtown on 11th ave.

Edit: Though not exactly a steakhouse, if you're looking for really good food and a lot of fun and an INSANE amount of meat... hit up Bolero for their NON-STOP meat skewers. Mmmmm... meat....

Right on both counts.
Costco, as horrible as the name sounds, gives the best non specialty beef. Better than all the stores. Do it yourself.
And yes Chop is Moxies. I've just always had a real good experience.

You haven't tried steak until you've eaten dry aged steak. Rush (next to the palliser) has a great dry aged steak. It is hard to find dry aged steak in this city under $50. I think it is around $35 but you won't be upset.
The only thing i have had close was a kobe steak from Divino (no longer on the menu sadly).

If I want a good steak, I usually head down to Co-op midtown market and grab a couple of AAA dry aged striploin steaks from there and BBQ at home. They usually have 3 cuts there that are pretty much steak house quality. I have also occasionally seen the dry aged steaks at the Quarry Park location, but haven't had any luck at any other location.
