But, but their plates come out super hot. So that counts for something right?

Vintage is the best steak I've had anywhere at anytime.
I also think the Keg makes a nice one considering it's a chain. The prices are getting to the point where it's not that much of a deal anymore though compared to a place like Vintage.
I went to Nicks a few months ago (the one on Crowchild) and I thought I was transported back to the 70's. And not in a good way. Apart from the terribly boring sides, my steak was overcooked and full of grissle. I've had better steak at pubs (the steak sandwich at Craft is surprisingly awesome).

I know someone who currently works for the Alberta Beef Producers and is also a trained chef. I asked him where to get the best steak in the city, and his reply was Vintage and Ruth's Chris.
I'd treat that as an authoritative answer from a professional who really knows what they're talking about.

I love Nicks, but every time I've gone away from the pizza I've been disappointed. Definitely stick with the pizza.

I could be wrong...but doesn't Ruth`s Chris only use American steaks?
Edit: Yes...right on the website http://www.ruthschris.com/Steak-House/15469/

Personally, I would always support a place like Vintage over a chain like Ruth's Chris. For a place like Calgary, with all its fanfare about Alberta Beef, it's kind of embarrassing that a chain is even battling it out for best steak. One would think we'd be teaming with awesome steak houses in this city.

Another vote for Vintage. I've spent way too much money on steaks in my life (ie. $70 on a steak) and that didn't even come close to Vintage.

I have yet to get to Vintage, based on the responses here I really need to get my butt down there soon.

I've heard that before, but have yet to try the pizza. Will do so next time.

There are reasons for this.

I prefer Filet Mignon pan fried, other steaks grilled. One of the few places that know what a rare is. I always order rare, it usually comes out medium to mid rare.

A lot of people here are recommending places that are pretty pricey... ie Ceasars, Hys, Ruth's Chris, Cattle Baron, etc.
One place that I can recommend that is very reasonably priced and has nice ambience is Mr Schnapps in Shawnessy. Been there a number of times and the food is always great. An 8 oz. filet mignon costs $28

Another place thats a little pricier but very good is Wellingtons on MacLeod Tr.. A 10 oz. NY strip costs $29

By the way, for those who are looking for Beef Wellington... try Wellingtons.

Oddly enough, best steak I had recently was at Escoba.
Also, while not the best, don't hate on The Keg. It seems like they've made an effort to improve their atmosphere, food, and service in recent years.

Must just be taste preference, but I always prefer the flavor of Canadian beef over American. No matter if it's a cheap or expensive cut, the American ones always seem to be a bit more tasteless in comparison. I'd take a Vintage steak over a Peter Luger's any day of the week.

After watching many episodes of Hell's Kitchen, I've always wanted to try a beef wellington.
Anyone know a place that has it on their menu?

I used to go to vintage quite a bit, but we've had a couple of instances with pretty bad service, so stopped going.
Ruth's Chris is staying in business for two reasons, the corporate events, and they have the best private dining rooms.
Funny thing, I went to a steakhouse in Dubai, the entire menu was Alberta beef. That was nice to see.

...my favourite steakhouse in Calgary is Ruth’s Chris. Serving the best of the best with both Alberta Triple A and USDA prime beef (American) with amazing service and an amazing overall experience.

That said, I agree with everyone who says to support a local business over an international chain, which is why I always go to Vintage when I want a steak and have yet to try Ruth's Chris.

Oh man, I love beef wellington. The St. James Gate pub in Banff was the only one I've seen in a long time....and it was absolutely fantastic. I went back there specifically for that, and the #######s took thing of the menu!
I have no idea where to get one now, so anyone knows, I'd love to hear it.
Although I have mode one at home which was pretty good too. It's not that hard, although a little time consuming.

hahahaha, I went to a Gordon Ramsay place and I got the beef wellington, the risotto and the scallops. I figured they would be pretty safe bets. It was friggen delicious.

Bad service is bad service, even if it's local. I've never had a bad experience there, so hopefully yours was an exception (or at the very something they are working on to fix).
