I was leaving the park to the north (on 4th street) and it come from the south streaking past the grandstand, then it turned west around downtown before heading north again, looping to the west before setting up for a runway 34 arrival (from the south).

That's the funny thing. These horses WANT to run. There are a small amount of species that have evolved and co-existed with humans.

I watched this horse get a massage down on CBC on Friday and I wondered why we couldn't be as lucky. He had better doctors than I.

There is a misconception among animal rights activists that it would be better for all animals to run free. Strangely enough, for about 50 species they'd come right back.

They would not be happy free.

It's really sad to see chuckwagon horses get injured, but retired racehorses are not the best horses to have around to ride, they're bred to run and not too smart. I don't know if it's better for a horse to be eaten or get to race for another 10 years and maybe die in an accident.

The Stampede defines Calgary, without it we would be just another no-name city that some people may have heard of. Animals are used for entertainment all the time, as long as they don't suffer inhumanely, it's not any different than using them for food.

Was down at the grounds at watched Tails today inside the Corral. Standing ovation from the crown when the show ended. Quite odd as I thought the show was pretty mediocre myself.

I kinda liked it. I just have an appreciation of how much effort goes into a live production like Tails, especially when when they have to perform 3 times a day, 10 days straight.

Though I did spend half the time wondering if Tom Jackson would ever find work after the stampede

I was gutted to hear that Jason Glass lost the championship on a penalty - I was really cheering for him.

Overall, though, what an amazing Stampede. Fantastic from start to finish. I feel so lucky to live in this city.

Official attendance: 1 409 371. I can't imagine that record being broken anytime soon.

I couldn't be happier that the Stampede is over. A boon for the economy, a tragedy for the animals. PETA or the province needs to step in and regulate the event. It's time for the chuckwagon races to be banned.

Indeed. It isn't like the Calgary Stampeders represent the Stampede City in the CFL, with many player driving vehicles purchased at Stampede Toyota. Also, we don't make the Business section of major American newspapers without it.

There is far more to Calgary than just the Stampede, but it is naive not to think that it is the event that defines our city. Much like New Orleans is defined by Mardi Gras. We have a celebration and tradition that is a century old. Few places in Canada can make that claim. Something we should take pride in, imnsho.
