I've been hit for duty on camera accessories and parts, but I have never bought the camera itself from the states.

Before you buy a camera from the US, check into the warranty situation. For example, Nikon Canada will not honour the warrenty if the camera was not bought in Canada...Similar restrictions exist in the US

i did know that, as a friend of mine was in asia and bought one.

although some stuff comes out a little quicker over there the prices for cameras are remarkably similiar in different places, as opposed to other consumer goods.
