His health was failing the last few weeks. I'd suspect that.

^ He's been seriously ill for some time now (recall that he had to be wheeled in on a gurney during his recent trial.)

In any event, if true, good riddance.

EDIT: Beaten to it by kirant.

I'm not sure if this is the same incident, Caged Great, but it seems he's in a coma (or critical condition, dependant on your news source)

State TV said Mr. Mubarak was in a “critical” condition and has been placed on a respirator. The state news agency MENA said Mr. Mubarak’s heart stopped and a defibrillator was used to restart it.

The Egyptian state news network is saying that he's clinically dead (means he's on a respirator but there's no brain activity)

Getting to live to 80 something as a dictator who had all the power and wealth a human being could possess and then die of natural causes a few months after getting overthrown is a pretty fortunate life as they go...

Too bad Egypt's not in much better shape after the whole revolution atm. Lot of dictators dead this year. Next up... Al-Assad?

I don't know if Al-Assad is going to come out of this dead. At the worst a deal will be brokered where he'll be flown out to one of the Russian Naval ships and spirited into exile in Russia or China.

I just don't see the rebel groups making the kind of gains that they did in Libya and I don't see the polical determination that we say in Egypt.

His health deteriorated with his departure to prison.

I wonder how bad he really didn't want to go, and pretty much stressed himself out into submission. He must have been scared ####less going to a Cairo prison.

Who knows. I seem to recall Saddam Hussein was offered exile before the invasion and he turned it down.

As evil as some of these characters are, they also tend to be extremely stubborn.

Saddam was as close to friendless as it gets.

Al-Asaad has strong allies in Russia and China, he's still receiving arms (rumors of new Hind gunships showing up over Syria).

At the same time the situation is starting to become embarressing for Russia and China, I'm sure the pressures on for a exit strategy. The Russian's have dispatched two naval vessels "To protect Russian civillians"
