The start lines of a 10 km, half-marathon or marathon are among the best girl-watching spots on the planet.
60% of recreational runners in North America are female and a typical half-marathon is 60% female. The Millarville Half is running 70% female registrations so far.
Just a by-product.

While informative, this does not provide me with pictures.
FYI, these type of stats is why I took Gymnastics and Swimming/Diving while at Uni. Me, two other fellas, and 25 very active females between the ages of 18-25!!
So, all you athletic people on CP. When doing cardio, when should you do the intense portion?
I like to walk my dog still but I need to beef up the cardio, so I've been taking him out for a walk then when I get home I've hopped on the treadmill and done an extra 10 minutes of run/walk/jog/walk/run/cool off (Ill be adding more time as I become less out of shape lol). Should I be doing this before I go out for the better work out or does it matter?

Don't know which method is best, but for me I start of with a good walk to loosen up my legs a bit and then run at a decent pace for a prolounged period of time (40-50 minutes now) before doing a walk cool down. Before I had the endurance to do this I did two 5 minute walk (3.5 mph), 10 minute run (+6.0) intervals.

At the Canadian Pool Lifesaving Sport Championships I got 9 gold medals, 1 silver medal, 6 provincial records and 3 Canadian records.
There wasn't alot of competition, but I'll take it! I'm freakin' stoked!
(and kudos to my husband for graciously forcing himself to go to Edmonton and entertaining a 3 year old for 2 days!)

I hit the ice for the first time in 3 years today, it felt like I never got off the ice. Alabama tryouts are in August and I need to put on about 10-15 healthy pounds and get into shape.

As a varsity athlete myself, I really recommend some of you guys check out www.runningmap.com
It's an excellent site to keep track of your runs and how far you've gone. Really simple after that to figure out what type of pace you are running at with a bit of math.

You're going to get opinions on either side of the issue.
The important thing is to put in the time/effort.
I have two pretty good rules of thumb:
1) If you aren't tired after a workout, it wasn't a very good workout. If you want results, either work longer or harder.
2) Whatever you just did is great...now do more!
Think of those two things and you'll see results.
Good luck.

Do your running before the walk.
I often run 16.5 km (10 miles) on a Sunday morning, shower, then take the dogs out to the mountains for a long hike.
I could not do the reverse of that very well.

Ran the Calgary Half in 1:55:52 . . . . had a sprained left foot so it was a bit of a surprise. Not too bad for a crotchety old buzzard north of 50 years of age.
Our Millarville "Run To The Farmers' Market" Half Marathon coming up on June 16 is coming together well . . . . . Emily Kroshus, 2011 Canadian Women's marathon champ, and Adela Salt, 2011 UK silver medalist in the 55 KM distance, have entered. There's a 1:32 male half marathoner entered in the last few days and a guy who ran sub 1:25 in the Calgary Half was inquiring a few days ago.Over 200 registrations now which is good for a first race. Should be a fun morning on Racetrack Road!!

That's impressive. I came about a minute after you (I'm 26). I pulled a muscle coming up that damn railway underpass and walked the better part of the last 2 km. I ran 2:08 last year, so improved roughly 12 minutes on my time, despite not training nearly as hard.

When I began running a few years ago this routine worked wonders. Music is alright, but once you know the pattern you can do it without the soundtrack.
I know at least one anonymous CP runner finished the marathon under three hours. Surprised he didn't come in here to post his time.
I am a bit late to the goals, but I will be running one or two legs in the Sinister 7 this year. I have been running it and the Death Race on teams for the last few years and always have a good time. The Death Race is a higher caliber event, but I think the Sinister 7 is more fun and has a more laid back attitude. I definitely prefer trail running to road running, especially if you can get into the bush and run single track trails.
I saw some mention of the Tough Mudder above and thought we should try to get a CP team entered. It will be in Calgary next year and seems to bill itself as a team event. I don't think you race together, but we could make some cool CP jerseys and you get a discount if you sign up as a team.

Great day though. Can't wait til next year.
I probably ran right by you. Thanks for slowing down.
Melissa Kendrick, winner of the 10 km at the Calgary Marathon weekend, just registered. So did Nathan Kendrick - he's run 1:11 half marathons in the past. With the other two I mentioned above, its going to be a fast day.

Just signed up for another half. Was going to sign up for two, but they're too close together, which spoils that plan. Edit, nevermind, confusing my months. Can do both.
So I'll get my:
3 Half's done (one extra)
1 or my 2 10 km's out of the way
Have yet to do any other races. We'll see what I can muster together by November.

Rocky Mountain Half and Harvest Half? Those are the two Fall ones to do.
The inaugural Millarville "Run To The Farmers' Market" Half was actually a big success. We had 296 registrations, including some higher-end talent.
Duncan Marsden of Calgary was the winner in 1:14:03 with Nathan Kendrick second in 1:18. Melissa Kendrick was the top woman in 1:21.
Great reviews from runners about the course and the unique, hand-made, clay-fired finishers medals by one of our Farmers' Market vendors.
The top five runners through the rest of the pack variously described the course as "challenging," "hilly," "strategic," "gorgeous," and "fun." In a post race survey, 98% of more than 100 respondents said they were "Very Satisfied" or "Satisfied" with the event and 100% said they would recommend it to a friend. We might double participation next year.
Some hiccups to work out that you would expect in any new event but we've got those surrounded already.
As far as I know, this might be the only point-to-point race in Alberta and one of maybe three or four in western Canada. They're more common in the USA and popular.

I want to be able to run a 5K by the end of the year. I used to run a lot but ankle problems stopped me for a while. After the 5 K i just want to start working my distance up as much as I can.
I'm doing Crossfit Fran right now. My goal is to be under 5 mins. I'm sitting at 7 mins 10 sec (my first time).
In case you're not sure what Crossfit Fran is. It's 3 rounds, 21-15-9 reps doing a 95lb thrusters with front squat and push press, then pull ups.
Here's a youtube example:
Umm in Crossfit do they actually teach to do pull ups like that? I get that you are trying to do it as fast as possible, but why not do standard pull ups instead of having your momentum just do half the work for you with those kipping pull ups?
