I think superstar is a term thrown around much too loosely these days.

Gretzky was a superstar.
Lemieux was a superstar.
Orr was a superstar.
Lindstrom is a superstar.
The Rocket was a superstar.
Bobby Hull was a superstar.
Messier was a superstar.
Lafleur was a superstar.
Crosby is a superstar.
Jagr is/was a superstar.
Coffey was a superstar
Ray Bourque was a superstar.

Sorry but Chara is not a superstar. He's a great d-man but not in the superstar category.

If this is the list then the argument is not necessary, because a lot of teams who have won the cup didn't have superstars. I would say Chara and Thomas played like superstars in last years playoffs. Keith, Toews and maybe even Kane played like superstars two years ago. Ward and Staal for the 'Canes cup. Richards, Lecavalier, Boyle, St.Louis. Niedermayer and Pronger. Crosby and Malkin. Pretty much every year the winning team had guys play like superstars, whether or not they continued to play like superstars after the fact is another argument.

I would define all those players as generational talents.

Stars, Allstars, Superstars, then GT.

The Con Smyth winners list is littered with players who have performed like superstars during their quest for the cup but were not superstars during their career.

Pronger is the only other D man "currently" playing I would consider a superstar after Lidstrom.

Baertchi, hopefully becomes a superstar. I'll take All-star, though.

Then I would say only 5 or possibly 6 players on my list are GT's. The rest are just superstars.

Still doesn't make Chara one of them.

Gretzky, Orr, Lemieux, Roy are probably the only GT's IMO.

Ya gotta throw Maurice "The Rocket" Richard in there. The guy absolutely dominated the game in his prime. People rioted over him. Opposition players feared him....

But I do think he could become one of the key building blocks around which the Flames can build a Stanley Cup contender...

...... oops... haven't we had this discussion already?.... my bad.

Lets just leave it at "we like Sven!"

Get back on topic folks, the issue of who is a superstar can be started as a separate thread
