There are no apps that can run in the background constantly checking the internet. The maximum amount of time any app can run in the background is 10 minutes, unless its a navigation, VOIP, or music playing app, and those exceptions are granted by Apple on a case by case basis as a part of the App Store review process.
So you'll have to produce a documented list of apps that demonstrate the behaviour you're talking about (sustained internet access while backgrounded), otherwise we will have to take the documented behaviour of iOS at face value.

My NHL Gamecentre app gives me real time notifications even if I have not opened it in weeks.
LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Scrabble, Gamecenter all do notifications in the background.
They all pull/push data from the Internet.

Yeah pretending to be a VOIP app was one way people were trying to get around the background limitation.
I thought part of the battery issues with some apps revolved around the ads, or at least I remember reading that somewhere.
I wish they'd add a timer to the background app services, if I wanted to make an app that woke up once an hour and did something (got your location, checked for a message, whatever) I can't really do that.

Most likely those are through push, where the NHL Gamecentre server actually pays attention to whatever it is that needs attention, then when it needs to it'll send a push notification that either puts the little number on the icon, or presents a dialog that you can hit ok and the notification will launch the app.
They don't continuously poll data in the background.

No they don't. The push notification service baked into your device and running at all times receives push notifications on their behalf. As discussed in my previous post, having more than one app registered for push notifications has no bearing on battery life, other than the higher volume of notifications, which is something you can directly control from the Settings screen.

Pretty sure pretending to be a VOIP app is pretty much a guaranteed rejection from the store now - and this wouldn't account for the "lot's of apps" accessing the internet in the background that people are alluding to.
For timers, can't apps schedule local notifications (on-device push notifications that don't go OTA) to have themselves prodded to life on a fixed schedule?

Yeah, I'm not even sure many apps even got through with doing it, I just remember reading about some apps trying it.
Would the local notification happen seamlessly though? Or would it pop up a dialog requiring you to hit ok?
I want it to be completely seamless in the background. Which they many not like because that's a potential battery drain issue once again (an app that does this every 10 seconds), but they could limit it to a minimum 15 minutes or something.

Yeah, I think you're right - it causes a notification to the user, and from there they can choose to accept the notification and cause your app to be launched.
No sneaking around in the background.

As promised, here is some pics of the eBay back case. I quite like it, was a worthy purchase and goes great with smart cover.
added spoiler tag since images are large

That wasn't a "I went to a Holiday Inn last night" statement. I meant that at the Apple seminar they gave tips on how to charge faster. Many of the people complaining about slow charge times are people that are using their old iPad 2 charger.

Which is identical to the new charger

anybody tried out Paper by 53 Things? I think it's great.
It's free, but additional brushes/pens will cost ya.

Russic and I tried it this morning. It is slick but it's missing a couple key features. The colour pallet is really limited and there is no way of adding your own images to the page. It would be cool to take a photo, attach it to a page and then write a comment next to it or to use it as a reference for your drawing.

Paper is made by the Courier guys (remember Courier?), so I wonder if they could expand upon Paper to do what KTrain mentions. It does feel super cool, but I still prefer something like Sketchbook Pro. I'm a god-awful drawer, so I love that I can lay an image into Sketchbook Pro, add a layer on top of it and then trace out something. Some of the brush effects in Paper are arguably cooler though. I really like how the paints behave with one another (they actually mix to create different colours).

I apologize if this has been answered somewhere in the thread.
Is there a way to keep a continuous hotspot connection through my iPad and iPhone? My iPad connects through WiFi to my iPhone with no problems. However, when the screen shuts off on my iPad and I go to use it again, I have to go back into the settings and connect it to my iPhone again. Is there a way to keep it connected at all times or at least until I turn my hotspot off?
Loving this new iPad by the way...it is a thing of beauty.

I bought a new iPad as a birthday gift for my Mom and got myself an iPad2 for 15% less $419 as I have a friend who works at the Apple store. I wish I just forked out the extra money as the screen difference would have been worth it if I had a chance to play with both a bit more before buying.
Mango, that is strange...I connect my lappy all the time to my iPhone's Hotspot and even when it comes out of sleep it auto connects. I password protect my Hotspot, too. I just tried connecting my iPad to the iPhone Hotspot and mine auto connects from sleep. Hmmm sorry I have no solution for you.

Are any of you who got the new iPad3 using it to RDP into a Windows machine? How are you finding this experience? What kind of resolution are you running when you use your Windows RDP session? Just trying to get an idea of how well the retina display is working with RDP desktops.

Pylon says my white iPad is for girls. I got it free through work though so I'm not complaining.
