When you can be a professional and grossly out of shape I don't think I'd call it a sport. It's a game of skill and even though some of the best golfers are in great shape and probably very athletic to extremely athletic, I'd lean towards not calling it's participants "athletes".
|
Definitely a game requiring a high level of hand/eye co-ordination and the ability to walk some longer distances.
Requires very little cardio ability though. You'll probably break out in a sweat on a hot summer day.

You can be viciously uncoordinated and complete a triathlon.
You can be brutally out of shape and be a scratch golfer.
Both guys are better athletes than me.
Here's hoping I keep my point streak up in division 4 weekend division rec hockey this weekend

While I don't disagree that there are some golfers in poor physical condition, with your argument I could easily say that O-lineman are fat and therefore football is not a sport and overweight all-star pitchers are out of shape and therefore baseball is not a sport. Would you agree with me?

Those fella's are athletes, they run, hit and move. I would have more respect for golfers if they actually carried their own bags. Then conditioning would come into the equation.

Ride the highwood pass before it opens. I say it every spring and have yet to do it.
I also want to do a century. 100 miles. The furthest I've ridden is only 127km which was last year. This year I want to make it 162 km.

Still think that MMA fighters are the best athletes in the world in terms of most 'well rounded'. Explosiveness, power, endurance, coordination, ability to take damage, speed, hand/leg dexterity, technique, the list goes on and on...

5'9 165 lbs right now, I've got to drop the fat and get to 185 by October 2012 for Alabama Hockey tryouts. Hopefully I can put the healthy weight back on.

Well you have to run consecutive KM's at a 4:00 per km or faster pace for 20 minutes. That's 15 KM per hour. I have no idea how fast a runner you are? If you can do it in 21 minutes you should be able to get there with a bit of regular paced running or just a good day. If not you've got a bit of work cut out for you. For some people that 40 min 10 km mark is a real tought one to make - for others it's not that hard. I think it's one of those things that if you're a good runner you can get to that mark quite easily for others they'll never get there or it's a major battle to.
Try doing 3 runs a week. One run at the pace you want to do and two others one a long run the other just a short run.
Sunday or Monday 40 minutes or more, increasing by 10% every week.
Tuesday or Wednesday a paced run, 1 km at a fast pace, close to your current race pace, with a 90 second rest, repeat so you do 4 kms.
Friday just do a nice light jog. 20 to 30 minutes.
The next week do the same thing but swap out the 4x1km's for 2x2 km's at a pace 5-10 seconds slower than the 1 km pace. The following week go back to the 4x1km pace.
Add 10 % to your runs (not the paced runs) each week.
Slowly build up your paced days, like start at a pace that's hard, but you can still do.
If you can do the 5 km in 25 minutes right now your paced days for 3-4 weeks should be around the 4:45 - 4:50 mark. Then slowly drop it until you're comfortable doing the 1 km pace at 3:55 per KM and the 2 km at 4:00.

I'd love to see you curl as a front end player for a bonspiel and say curling isn't a sport. Throwing the rock is the easy part. Sweeping 60 rocks a game, two or three times a day, over three or four days in a row isn't easy.
You can do any sport, at any age, in any shape, but you can't do it well or at the top level. The top level curlers are all excellent athletes in superb shape.

My goal run an unsupported trail marathon on the Banff Highline from the Sunshine Ski area parking lot to Highway 93. It is about 40.5 km long with 1500m of gain and loss. I am hoping to do it in under 8 hours.
I hiked it a few years ago over the course of 3 days but it seems like a good challange.
As far as running goes I have been moving away from organized races as they all seem to be a scam with $50 plus dollar entry fees just to run and get a certified time and a t-shirt. I can get close enough by doing race effort runs by myself. MEC is having a $10 5/10k in April that I signed up for and I usually run the Corporate Challange 10k in September.

I will likely be one of maybe 6-10 competitors in the Senior women category. I'll be doing events that I've taught, but never competed in. I'm thinking I should put in a couple of practices before then? Or should I just wing it and see what happens?
|
So just got back from Edmonchuck (what a hole!)
I was entered in 5 events and I ended up with 3 golds, a silver and a fourth place (out of about 12 other ladies in the "Masters" division)
But the best part: I SET A PROVINCIAL RECORD!!!!! Not bad considering I didn't practice (yes, I know: bad girl) And I was .66 of a second off breaking a second one.
So should I reset my goal and enter in Nationals and actually practice and see what I can do? I was stoked. Reliving my youth was awesome!
