I remember that, I didn't see the game but the replay of the incident was hockey news for at least a month if not the year. The footage unfortuantely is limited in this thread, the news reels showed that whole incident. I remember seeing buckets of blood coming out of his neck and the trainer rushing with a towel. Hats off cause in those minutes that trainer was able to save his life, that's a moment I still talk about with friends.

I remember it happened the year Calgary won the cup

I remember seeing that on the highlight reels that very evening. The bleeding looked like the Black Knight from Monty Python's "The Holy Grail".

I won't click on the link because I do remember watching that - and I was only 12 years old. Very disturbing and thankfully he survived and nothing quite so grotesque has happened in the NHL since - except maybe the Bertuzzi incident.

wow, i have never seent that before. I can't believe that that happened. that is terrible, glad he wasn't as hurt as i thought he would have been.

I saw a special on him a couple years ago.

He talked about how he thought he was going to die, and was even able to ask the medic if he was gonna die. Nobody on the ice knew what to do. They all thought they were watching him die.
He Had nightmares about it for years after. Ended up extremely depressed and even tried to kill himself overdosing on pills IIRC. Was never able to really get back into the net effectively.
-On a positive note, he eventually got past all that in was doing better. He was (maybe still is) working as the goalie coach for an NHL team. (Buffalo IIRC)

I remember seeing that in all of the highlights the night it happened. I was surprised at his recovery (he played 3 weeks later I think) as I wasn't sure he would survive that night.

I remember that incident like it was yesterday.

Watched the highlites on TV while eating a McDonald's cheeseburger at my parent's kitchen table.

Needless to say, I couldn't finish eating the burger. Still amazed at how calm and efficient the Sabres' trainer was that night........saved a life in the process.

Part of me is surprised we don't see stuff like that more often. Every time there's a group of players on the ice in the crease or sliding in the corner, I think about what happened to Malarchuk that night.

For sure, one of the reason I don't like seeing vicious crosscheck infront of the net. hate for a guy to go ass over tea kettle...

I remember that too, very scary incident. The Audette incident of a few years ago reminded me of that too. The way he was jumping into the pull doors of the dressing room in a panic. I'm very surprised he played again too.

I thought that was Souray after getting his wrist stepped on?

Nope, it was Audette who got his arm slashed.

Trent McCleary was the Hab who got the puck in the throat. I'm old enough to remember THAT one, at least! That was mighty scary to see as well.

I'm positive that it was Audette, I had him in my hockey pool that year.

As for the slapshot to the throat thing it was Trent McLeary.
