You assessment that he has 'a lot of work to do' is valid in the sense that every young player has to work hard to improve, but your comment suggests he has shown some sort of weakness that he must overcome (of course, you didn't mention what that weakness is).
I'm not saying the kid doesn't have any weaknesses, but he isn't showing any att the moment. He's been in position, hasn't taken any unnecessary risks and he capitalized on his opportunities. He's fast, quick and has thus far shown to have a high work ethic on every shift...not sure where the 'lots of work to do' comes from at all.

Yes, it is no surprise that he has work to do. He has played a total of 3 NHL games now so that is completely expected.
To elaborate on some of his weaknesses that I have seen in his few games at the NHL level is that he often is leaving his zone a little early looking for a pass. He needs to provide support a bit lower down in his own end. He is obviously excited so I am not really that concerned with this. Iggy is notorious for this is well but that doesn't mean it is smart hockey.
As well, he seems to be a little over active with his stick. He is using his feet for the most part so they are not really penalties but he needs to try and get body position.
The other issues that I have seen have to do with the fact his is pretty much a boy playing against men. With that said, I am surprised at how much he initiates contact. He doesn't duck or dodge checks and braces properly for oncoming hits. As he thickens up a bit this will definitely help his game.

He can only play in the playoffs once the WHL playoffs are over and/or the Winterhawks are out.

I may be wrong but my understanding of the CBA is that Baertschi can not play 10 professional games, regardless of whether or not they are regular season or playoff.

9 minutes in game one; then 11, and 14 minutes last night, including time late in the game and OT

He can play 9 regular season games, and can play any games in the playoffs SO LONG as his team is no longer in their playoffs.

what about the 50 contract limit? IIRC, Feaster said his contract does not count against that limit now because he is on emergency recall. If he were called up in the playoffs after his CHL season was over, would it have to be on an emergency basis?

I could have sworn contract limit and players a team is allowed to carry does not kick in during playoffs? Correct my understanding of the CBA if I am wrong.

Playoff games count against the 10 game limit exactly the same as regular season.
As a matter of fact....if he goes to Abbotsford when Portland is done...those games count as well.

His growth game after game has been exceptional. His first game, he was clearly nervous. Easily pushed off the puck, played a very simple game, didn't do anything wrong or spectacular, but he was starting to build some confidence.
Second game, he's pretty quiet, but he's definitely learning what changes he has to make in order to try and get by NHL defenders. On his goal he does exactly what he needs to do, heads to the net, gets a tip, stays there, finds the puck and uses his skill to put it away.
Last night I was noticing him play a lot more assertively, he was actively trying to beat defenders, not just making safe plays, and once again just drives the net on his goal. That's hockey 101, your team has the puck and you don't, get your ass to the front of the net and something good is going to happen.

I don't mean to be contradictory but can you direct me to some sort of source that supports this?
From the CBA Article 9 Section 1.d.i:
In the event that an 18 year old or 19 year old player signs an SPC with a club but does not play at least ten (10) NHL Games in the first season under that SPC, the term of his SPC and his number of years in the Entry Level System shall be extended for a period of one (1) year.
From Article 1 (definitions):
"NHL Games" means regular season games and playoff games.

So the Flames can still call him up for the Finals after he wins the Memorial Cup? Excellent!

The 50-contract limit has an interesting distinction in that the limit pertains to the season(s) for which a contract is valid. All NHL player contracts expire on June 30. The year varies from contract to contract, but the day remains the same (as we’ll discuss more when we look at player contracts in later editions of the feature). Knowing it has expiring contracts coming off its 50-contract maximum, a team can sign players to contracts for the following season. By doing so a team may have more than 50 different players signed to valid SPCs, as long as 50 or fewer are signed to valid SPCs for that current season AND fewer than 50 SPCs on tap for the upcoming season.
|
would this not imply playoffs are included in the 50 contract limit?

Good speed.
Nose for the net.
Calm with the puck.
Forechecks hard.
Tries (and usually fails) to beat d-men with junior stick moves.
Tends to lose the puck in traffic.

I concede to Malcolmk14's point, however Canada 02 hmm, I'm still not sure about that one. On the surface perhaps that interpretation would be correct, but I'm not sure why I thought differently.
I think we can agree though however, it would have been a slim chance Baertschi coming back up for the playoffs anyway if we made it in.

I can't agree (nor disagree) with these statements as I haven't noticed what you've seen...though I'm excited to pay closer attention next game
He appears to need more strength to compete along the boards and in the corners, but one thing I did notice that you shared is that he hasn't shy'd away from contact. A couple of times lastnight I cringed as he went into the corner while taking a hit to make a play, but he took each hit properly while attempting to win the puck.
Thanks for the great post, I'll be watching for him leaving the zone as well as the stickwork.
I do remember one play where I thought for sure he took a slashing penalty but there was no call, thankfully.

Booo... that was Ray Ferraro trying to sound smart. He tried to put the puck through the skates of Brent Burns... Tanguay and Iginla try moves like that multiple times per game, and NHLers make that same move work plenty of times... Sven tried, Burns stopped... I think its silly to suggest that was some rookie mistake, its not like he thwarted an odd-man rush or something, he was trying to create an odd-man situation.
Furthermore, Burns committed to the puck on the play (as opposed to the body) which is exactly what Sven wanted... if Burns is a second late in getting his skate turned, that a quality scoring chance for the Flames... low risk, high reward in my book.

Yeah, he is likely going back before the Coyotes game. That's too bad. Who is in charge of clearing our injured players? I guess the NHL has some oversight on this process so teams don't just cheat right?
Is this the svend for Sven?
