Default Calgary Woman dies scuba diving in Mexico

http://www.calgarysun.com/2012/03/06...ving-in-mexico

Quote:
The husband of a Calgary woman who died in a scuba diving accident in Mexico says he wants answers in the tragedy he insists never should have occurred.
On Saturday, Ronda Cross, 41, was scuba diving in about 23 metres of water off the coast of Cabo San Lucas’ El Chile beach when her cousin, Roxanne Amundson and the pair’s dive master emerged, complaining of trouble breathing, said Colin Cross.
“I was told there were problems right from the beginning — Roxanne had come up a couple of times saying she had problems breathing ... the dive master had to be helped onto the boat,” said Colin Cross, who was in Florida at the time.
My best friend was in Mexico scuba diving on March 2nd and she told me they warned about the possibility of Carbon Monoxide poisoning before they dove. Such a tragic story, and maybe a negligent death.

How does this happen? This is the first time I've ever heard you could get carbon monoxide in your breathing tank.

I dive and always think of this kind of thing happening. You depend on the skills and care taken by those who fill your tanks. I don't know how this happens. My last dives were in Mexico 14 months ago. Tragedy.

Waiting for the whole she died doing what she loved line

"Bobby was shot in the stomach and died over a period of hours, but he died doing what he loved.

"Johnny died while cliff diving he bounced off of the cliff several times before breaking his back on the sharp rocks below and drowning, but its ok because he died doing what he loved"

I've had an experience in Mexico where oil leaked into the feed from the compressor. Felt mildly nauseous after the dive, and can imagine how I might have felt after a worse problem.

From the article:

But he said his wife, Ronda — a much more experienced diver with nearly 200 plunges under her belt — had gone deeper while her companions had been alerted to trouble.

I don't have as much experience as her, but one of the most important rules they teach is to never dive alone. In this case it sounds like there were 3 of them, and 2 people surfaced because of trouble.

Should there have been CO in the tank? Of course not, and somebody should be held accountable for that. However had she been following the rules of safe diving, she likely would have survived.
