Like they said, if you try and don't succeed, try, try again. Congrats to Hughes.

For second I thought Anders was now out. Harper would just appoint him to the Senate anyways.

And he's set for life. Good for you Mr. Hughes. Many people, when they lose on their first lottery ticket, buy a second one!

Ah, I was kinda hoping Shiraz would pull through, just because I like his name. It's not like you can enjoy a nice glass of Ken with dinner.

Sure you can. You just have to make sure you set the blender to frappe and chill to 4 degrees afterwards.

Something doesn't sit right on this. I'd like to know more actual facts why there was a need for a mulligan on the first vote

Basically, the guy who won the first time wasn't white and isn't from the area (he was an MLA for another area previously). There was concern within the party that he wouldn't be able to hold off Wild Rose in an area where they have a strong chance, so they held the contest again so the party brass' preferred candidate could run.

The guy loaded up a bunch of out of riding folks and stacked the voting polls in Cgy-West with people from his old riding. Pretty scummy guy using scummy 1960's tactics to try and win. Glad the truth came out and there was a re-vote.

Well Shiraz Shariff was the MLA in Calgary-McCall from '95-'04 until he lost his seat to the Liberal (!) the last 2 elections.

When I heard that he was running in Calgary-West I figured he was simply carpetbagging. He is a long term back bencher, the only time we ever heard his name in the riding was when he had an annual Stampede breakfast or election time. Other than that he was invisible.

Supposedly, the above is why they required two pieces of ID at the SECOND vote, a passport and bills to an address in the riding, because of what I just explained.

**the above is just conjecture based on what I heard***

I've heard similar things from multiple sources and it's certainly consistent with the stringent requirements for proving you live in the riding.

What's wrong with this tactic when you have the party boss loading up with union voters to win her election?

Because the union voters were legally allowed to vote while the out-of-riding voters weren't?
