well I wasn't suggesting that we should pick Pouliot only because of chemistry - and it's not like he's a bad player or anything, he's an almost guaranteed first-rounder this year. He falls in the 10-20 range where we will probably end up picking, and I believe selecting D this year is a good idea because there are so many good D-men available and the best forwards will be gone when we pick. Plus Pouliot is a possible PP quarterback - something we don't have in our prospect pool ... in fact, I can't find any offensive D-men in our system. We already have a lot of defensive D-men, but Pouliot would fill a void in our prospect pool. Just saying. Otherwise we can always pick Ryan Pulock next year

I think part of the reason why our prospect defensive depth is a little shallow is because the Flames defense core is still pretty young and very mobile. Bouwmeester, Girodano, Butler, Brodie and now potentially Smith (assuming he is a solid NHL player) are all under 28-years-old.

Giordano and JBo both turned 28 years old this year, but yes I agree we have a relatively yound d-core that is yet to enter its prime.

Draft the player for how you see him turning out, if he's a good player he will develop chemistry at the NHL level with someone too.

Worked out with Horak, not so much with Howse.

I think it is too early to be writing off Howse.

7 games left for Sven. Predictions on what his totals for the regular season will be? I'm gonna say 38 goals 68 assists for 106 points.

I wonder if he'll be sent to Abbotsford next year to work on his defensive game.
I'd like to see him just make the NHL and let him learn through his mistakes in Calgary.

This is the only thread that has given me any joy this week. The talking heads love to beat up on our pool of prospects but I'm actually excited that at least a few of these guys (Bartschi, Ferland, Reinhart, Granlund, Gaudreau, Arnolds) will be nice pieces for the future.

WAY too early to write Howse off. He needs, though, to have a great off-season and NOT get out of shape, but improve in this area (As has been mentioned, Brett Hull wasn't the most fit guy early in his career and neither was Gary Roberts.).
Hopefully, though, his and the rest of his Heats' teammates' off-season doesn't start until June.

Again, no... this didn't work out Horak.
The Flames didn't get Horak because of the chemistry with Howse, go read the quotes from Conroy when they got him. Chasing after junior chemistry might be one of the worst things teams can do, and the Flames didn't do it in this situation.

Re: Howse
Started the season terribly due to well documented poor conditioning etc....
He had zero points in his first 20 AHL games, and just when it looked like his conditioning had improved, and he might start to get things going, he got hurt.
However, since returning from injury he now has 4 points (2 goals, 2 assists) in his last 7 games.
Hopefully he is turning the corner, and can have a strong finish to the season, a good solid off season, and make some noise at camp next fall.

He just needs to stop partying at Ranchman's all summer and realize that hockey is a 12 month job, you don't get summer's off anymore. He needs to dedicate his summer to his body, only way he'll improve enough to make some noise at training camp.

You know there's like a whole other forum on Calgarypuck for talking about prospect who are not Sven Fricken Bartschi...

110 - 40 and 70
He'll be firmly established on the first line by the end of next season. IMO he is the best prospect in this org since Dion.
Backlund and Horak do not have the swagger Sven does. That is the difference right there.

You know there's like a whole group of moderators on Calgarypuck that help decide what discussion is warranted on a thread and what isn't...

Is it reasonable to think Sven could stick with the big club next season and play in the top six? Keeping him up to play 3rd or 4th line duty would seem like a waste of his time and talents IMO.

Well there's that, along with a chasm that separates their hockey skills. Backlund is a skilled player, but i don't believe he has anywhere near the same kind of vision and stick skills that Baertschi does.
