Yeah, you're right, he should set up meetings to explore opening an office there, not claim he was actually doing the work.... Don't need a license to explore new markets.

Next thing you know I'm gonna need a board of directors foris to happen.
Setting up the meeting is easy, lots of client possibilities in Ottawa.

It will be on the subpoena information package.
They will reimburse you for travel expenses, lodging (hotel, or if you are staying at a friend's/relative's there is a different rate). There is a per diem for your daily meals, etc.
Yes it does suck. There is no "reward" for what you are doing for them and the time lost. They just cover your basic costs.

Why not call and ask? Or are you just bragging that you're a witness in a murder trial?

Not bragging... whats to brag about?
Just looking for options for my friend re expenses. Neither of us have ever been involved in a court case where you had to travel out of town, let alone fly thousands of miles to get there... and expenses will be very high.
My friend isn't rich and his pocketbook will take a significant hit if he has to attend the trial. Originally he wasn't even sure if he had to pay all his expenses or if the crown would reimburse him... I mean who other than lawyers or people who go to court a lot would know this?
Also his weekly paycheck will take a big hit as I assume he will be gone from work for a few days and since he gets paid approx $300 per day (and I doubt his boss will pay him while he's in Ontario) thats a lot of money to lose.

Damn!! Just got a calll from the RCMP. They have a subpoena for me too. Trial starts March 5. This whole thing started 2 years ago.... Nothing like leaving everything till the last f---ing minute!
I was hoping I would get out of having to go since my testimony is relatively insignifant. Obviously the prosecution thinks otherwise.
Damn... really don't want to sit around in a hallway for days awaiting my turn to testify which will probably take all of 5 minutes.

If the defendant is an adult, and there are no publication bans, care to post his name? I often follow murder trials just out of sheer curiosity.
At this stage, you shouldn't post anything about your testimony on any public boards, just FYI, as if you do the defence lawyer will take you to task about it.

My unfortunate friend was called to be a witness... in Edmonton. He had to bus up there and blow a long weekend sitting around outside the Courthouse waiting for the Crown attorney to call him in. In the end, he wasted 3 days sitting in a cold room (not even getting to experience the trial) and the Crown attorney came out and apologized and said they had enough evidence to convict and didn't need his testimony afterall. Wasted 3 days sitting in an empty room, having a few shoddy meals, a lame motel room, and a bus ticket on the government dime.
