From listening to the guy (I didn't skip the first 7 minutes) the daughter had been grounded for posting her personal gripes about her family on facebook before. The Dad repeatedly said he had just spent the day upgrading her laptop and she then went and used it to rip on him and her Mother.
I would not haven taken that well either...

sure, sounds like the daughter needed disciplining, no question thats his job as a parent.

i just dont think you should put your children in harms way to make a point and by broadcasting this video, he did just that.

Yes, ..and you implied that this method could cause her to commit suicide....which is quite a leap.

I had to apologize to a few teachers in front of my classmates a few times. My parents would phone to confirm it happened. I was also put in the "fish bowl" office several times after causing trouble. The fish bowl was a small room with a huge window facing the lobby of the school where all 350 kids could see who got in trouble. Yet after this public shaming I did not feel the urge to jump off a bridge over it.

I say cheers for more public shaming of bad behavior!

I agree with the fact that he should not publicly humiliate his daughter, but I can see where this is coming from.

As far as he's concerned, he has already been publicly humiliated by his own daughter from her posting about it on facebook. Mind you, there were no videos, but it was still public humiliation. In his case, he is just giving her a taste of her own medicine, but to a higher degree.

I'm not defending his actions, I don't agree with them. She should be disciplined, but I believe that should be kept in the household, certainly not all over the internet.

I like that he shot up her computer. The best way to punish a child is to take something away from them. I don't really agree with the public humiliation aspect of it, but if she were to kill herself over it, then she is going to kill herself one day anyhow as life gets worse than that.

A big part of the problem is that parents don't have the tools nowadays. In the past, a little bit of corporal punishment went a long way. I'm sure there a lot of people here like me who effed up once, got smack for it, and never did it again. It's the way of nature. Parents are now cornered into making bizarre psychological punishments to make their points, and imo, it is more cruel and damaging in the long run.

I don't see anything wrong with what he did. If had spoken and said the same sort of things his kid did publicly, back when I was a kid, then my parents would have done just the same: taken away something I liked and grounded me. At the same time, show their authority publicly. Call it "tough love" if you will.

She made a post to all her friends and whoever else saw it, degrading and showing no respect for her parents. She has to do a few chores around the house every day. OH BOO HOO! He warned her before, and these are the consequences.

This is really no different from when I was raised. It's just a different time and information travels faster.

I do however question how his daughter became like this. Whether it was through the parenting or just because of the "entitlement" type attitude that today's youth seem to have, being around today's society.

After reading through his responses, I also think he seems like a thoughtful guy. No one is a perfect parent, but I think this guy seems like he is doing his best to make his kid into a stronger person. Kudos.

Threatening to other laptops? I imagine in North Carolina a gun is just viewed as any other tool. It probably just seems over-the-top to people who aren't exposed to a reality where many people openly own and use hand guns. I am sure most people from that area would see it the same way if he used an axe.

He thoroughly explained his reasoning for grounding her. All he had to do was then to end the video, followed by making sure the daughter doesn't get the laptop again. There was no point in destroying an expensive and valued item.

The gun part was overreaction and it has nothing to do with having open access to guns. And it was threatening to the daughter because it became more than a rant after that; he seemed a little crazy. I fear that the gun part of the video just took away the impact the Rant part of the video would have had on the daughter.
