There are plans to drill and operate up to four "sweet oil" wells by the Walmart in Royal Oak Centre. I have zero knowledge of the oil and gas industry.
Just wondering if the CP knowledge base could provide me with a little information of what the potential risks/problems/inconveniences, if any, could come along with this type of drilling/well activity.
I really have no opinion, but the community is pretty wound up.
They'll move all the equipment on through the industrial rode near there (that goes to the landfill/gravel pit, so no one will notice). Then, in the middle of the night a derrick will rise up and they'll drill the well. I didn't see how deep they were going, but I'd guess it'll take a week or maybe two. Honestly, I don't think it's that big a deal. They're not going into a sour horizon, and blowouts of any kind are extremely rare. It's an oil target and it'll probably get a pcp pump, so it'll be a wellhead with little spinning thing on top (no big pumpjack). My guess is they'll put a shack over the wellhead, so you'll just see a building the size of a garden shed with a tank next to it.
I'm not really concerned about a blowout .... but I'll make sure to show my wife those pictures With Red Adair dead, I really have no hope anyways.
They will be drilling to 2430 m and there is a sour gas pocket at 2500 m - that is what the community newsletter says anyways.
They talk about having "flaring" on site. Does the well flare 24/7 or only occasionally?
Thanks for the info.
The company is Kaiser exploration, btw.

I don't know anything about how oil wells work, but is it the same as the one that's along Deerfoot near the Airport? I think I remember seeing one on Barlow Trail back before it was closed off where they made it look like a cowboy riding a horse while it was pumping up oil. They should do that for the Royal Oak one to pretty it up heh.

You don't put PC Pumps on wells unless they have sand production, typically (i.e. heavy oil). This is targetting the Viking and Cardium zones, light oil production and no sand.
Here's the details on the completion and facilities plans:
What type of equipment can we expect to see at the 1-28 well site?
In the event KXL is successful in its efforts to obtain production there could be production equipment on the site including a pump jack, separator, incinerator and tanks. In the event we’re highly successful there could be several pump jacks on the site, but tanks, separation and incineration would be at a remote location north of the 1-28 site, connected to it by pipeline.
Will there be more wells on the site or a pipeline from the site?
At this time we don’t know. If a pipeline is installed it will go north and parallel the existing ATCO pipeline in the area. If production proves to be economic there is a possibility of three more wells each with their own separator and pump jack but all using the same pipeline that would be installed initially. Every well and pipeline will require an ERCB application with required consultation and input from interested parties. If we succeed with the project you will be able to comment based on Kaiser’s actions on the 1-28 well.

Isn't that the same Walmart that was built to visually "hide" the nearby Remand Centre from the community? Between that and the massive number grow ops in the area, seems like the least of their 1st world worries.

I don't know why the Walmart was built ... but since it became a Supercentre, the price of groceries in the area sure has gone down.
These potential wells aren't really an issue for me .... just wanted to get some info. Alot of people are really upset, just wanted to see if there was any real reason to be.
The only real concern I would have would be the effect on property values due to the "perceived" issues. But I'm not moving for at least 20 years so that doesn't really effect me either.
^ Oh yeah, I forgot about the Young Offenders Centre as well.
Don't forget the nutballs at the Forensic Psychiatry Centre ..... I didn't even know that was there .... this oil well research is uncovering alot of stuff.
I'll be fine ... the Mormon temple is close to me. Mormons know how to handle catastrophes .... as long as you like dried food.

Flaring is generally pretty limited in duration, and for an oil well in the city they wouldn't be allowed to flare much. Sometimes there is some initial flaring right after the well is installed while they get it flowing properly and to test it (though flaring due to testing might not be allowed here - depending on how close it is to existing gas pipelines); other than that it would really just be limited to emergencies.

So Royal Oak pretty much has Arkham Asylum next to it?
