Do you know why that LH bird went mechanical? It wouldn't be the first LH A343 that has had mechanical issues here at YYC.

Edit: Nevermind, I see you don't know.

Edit 2: I would be very surprised if that landing during the windstorm had anything to do with it going mechanical. Could have been a problem that came up when they got ready to depart later in the day.

So how does that work? I would assume the plane used for the inbound LH flight also does the outbound flight later that day. Did the grounded bird flight get cancelled and they accomdated customers on the AC outbound flight and the next days flight? I would imagine they did not bring in another plane....Did i just answer my own question?

I would guess LH would try to get as many people onto the AC flight later that day. Then fly in the following days flight and try to get rid of the backlog that way, eventually the disabled 340 will probably depart empty back to FRA. A few months ago that is what happened.

Keep in mind since LH and AC are Star alliance they could route passengers onward through flights to YVR, YEG, YYZ, and YUL (not too mention even through American Star alliance hubs) to get people to where they needed to go with as little delay as possible.

I did a little more digging on where the disabled A340 ended up, looks like Lufthansa flew it over to Vancouver on Tuesday, perhaps to operate one of the flights out of there instead of flying it empty back to Frankfurt:

Looking into it, I can't find the flight back to Frankfurt being cancelled after the wind storm.

I agree with you, I can't believe I forgot this but I witnessed that flight depart back to Frankfurt the same day! They departed off of 16 around 1:30-2pm, and conducted a turn to the west before tracking north.

So the A340 that was stuck here was not from the flight that day.

The Dec.9 flight to Frankfurt was cancelled. Looks like it was flown to Frankfurt from Vancouver on the 15th as another ferry flight judging by the flight number.

LH494 on Dec.9th blew a tire on landing at Calgary. There is a CADORS report on it.

Nice detective work!

Quote:
DLH 494, a Lufthansa A340, blew a tire on touchdown on Runway 34 at Calgary. Staff 58 inspected the runway and did not find any debris. WJA 319 and WJA 112 were delayed departure about 10 minutes while the runway was inspected.

Curious if that's possible for an international flight like that, wouldn't there be issues with flying people into the US who may not be cleared for entry?

If they have a passport with them it shouldn't be an issue at all to route them through one of the US hubs back to Frankfurt (and points onward).

Of course there could be special circumstances that would prevent it such as nationals from a country that the US may require a visa for entry. So I would assume passengers like that would only be routed through another Candian airport to get to Frankfurt.

Remember all flights from Calgary to the USA are pre-cleared right here in Calgary. So even if there was an issue and someone was rejected entry into the US for the flight they could just come back out and get an alternate routing.

Stolen from CP's own CMayden's YHZ Flight Deals facebook page, by next Christmas airlines will have to advertise the actual fare with taxes and fees included.

Is there really more of an aggravation than seeing an advertised fare of say $79 one way, and see the final cost being about $300 return.

It's never really bugged me that much because I know that there will be all those fees and taxes on it. Seems like nothing to get that bent out of shape over.

Yeah, I don't get too bent out of shape over it. It's just annoying to see the price of your ticket more than double. If you're trying to compare prices not only between airlines but regions it can be rather difficult.

For example, being from Sydney NS, I can fly out of YQY which is about 15 minutes from my house. However it's only about a 4 hour drive to YHZ which isn't a bad drive and is the cultural norm to drive to Halifax for the weekend or fly. YQM is about the same distance away, so it's nice to check there too.

Being in Fredericton NB currently I've got YFC, YQM, YSJ, ZBF, and BGR are all within about 2 hours of me.

So comparing various tax rates, different fees, and such makes comparing flights difficult. This makes things much easier for those of us who live withing traveling distance of various airports.

In that scenario with so many airports around to choose from I can understand why a standard that shows the final price is so important. Less so for out here where you could look at YEG and maybe Great Falls for other options.

What about the dishonest fuel surcharge? The article implies it. I'm never suprised by government taxes, airport fees, and NAVCAN surcharges; what surprises me is the disgusting fuel surcharges that are different to every place airlines fly.

Good for the government to finally make the airlines be honest. Air Canada I'm looking your way.

Fuel charges are different at every airport, just like fees.
