Camera nerds please help

I caught my fiance trying to research a Camera for xmas for me. She knows that I want Cannon but I'm not sure if the t3i is worth the extra money over a T2i. Lets face it, she may be "buying it" for xmas for me but it's my money and I want to make sure it's worth the money.

Not worth it IMO, t3i improves just a little bit over t2i. If you want upgrade you might want to get 7D but it's probably cost a lot more. Since you have lenses from t2i already, you can probably just get the 7D body only and use the old lenses.

I have a Canon T1I and it takes beautiful pictures, and it's entry level priced if you can find it on sale like I did. I paid 649 dollars for the camera and the telephoto lens. Here's my favourite work I've done:

I actually don't think the T3i is much more money than the T2i depending on where you buy it. I've even seen the T2i more expensive than the T3i for some reason in certain places.

The general consensus with that line of cameras is that current owners of T1i/T2i shouldn't bother upgrading. However if I was purchasing a new one I'd go with the T3i.

I can't agree that Nikon is > Canon. Nikon sure has a lot more buttons than Canon though

First of all it's camera hunks. And the t2i is a damn fine camera, you'll be fine with it instead of the newer version.

Cannon computer is everything in house unlike the nikon...

I went with the t3i, got two UV filters, cannon 55-250mm f/4-5.6 Telephoto zoom lens. Bag, and 8 GB card in a package. so far I'm pretty happy.

Now that the OP's questions has been addressed and he has his camera I have a question as well. I am looking for an entry level DSLR camera for my wife for christmas. She is interested in stepping up from point & shoot but before we determine if she really likes it I don't want to break the bank (also I don't have the extra $ right now).

What are thoughts between these 3 cameras?

Nikon D3100 - DPreview 72% - Silver Award
Sony Alpha SLT-A35 - DPReview 73% - Silver Award
Canon EOS Rebel T3 - DPReview 69%

I can get the Nikon and Sony for about the same price while the Canon is a bit cheaper. My budget is pretty set so I can't really look at the D5100, T2i, T3i or Alpha A55. The Sony NEX-C3 is also a bit cheaper but it seems like the Mrs wants a more traditional looking DSLR.

Any camera in your price range will produce results that you won't be able to tell apart. It will come down to the lenses you end up collecting if you get in to it.


I would hit Kijiji and look for a used D90. You should be able to find something with some cosmetic wear in your budget. D90 blows D3100 and D5100 away. With those bodies you're stuck with AFS lenses if you want autofocus.
With a D90 your lens options are much greater.

A couple of months ago my wife was in the market for a new camera as well and we went to the Camera Store and talked it over with them. We lowered it down to the T3i. He showed us the T3i and T2i and expained the differences etc. After all that I said the "level with me, is it worth the extra $150 for the T3i?" He said "As a sales person, yes, as a camera guy not really unless you are shooting video a lot as it has a faster processor on it"

Long story short we have a T2i and are very happy with it.
