Shaw News Server
I just downloaded Binary News Reaper and I'm trying to connect to the local Shaw News Server.
Their website says it's called "shawnews". But I cannot connect, does not respond when I ping either.
Can anyone help me out? Thanks!

I think "shawnews" doesn't work if you're behind a router...
try "news.cg.shawcable.net" as the server address

If you're going after binaries, you might want to try Newsleecher. One of the best binary grabbers around. If you just want to read text, try Forte Agent.
And Shaw's server blows for binaries..tons of incompletes. On it's own, it's unusable.

Yah, Shaw's server does kinda blow for binaries... also because the retention time is only 1 day

It's actually a Stern group I'm after;
alt.binaries.howard-stern
A friend in the States uses News Reaper and subscribes to this group, gets everythign he needs.
I'm connected, just can't figure out the rest.

^^^when you open up the program there should be four Tabs the 3rd one over is called "newsgroups" click on that and then enter "stern" in the search field (its located right under the Queue tab)
that should give you about 15-20 groups to subscribe to .. find yours then highlight it and click subscribe (button under the servers tab)
then go back to the groups tab (second one in) the group you subscribed to should be there .. right click on it and select "refresh" once it hits 100% (right hand column) then double click on it and it a new tab should pop up giving you a list of binaries..
hope those directions help.. on a side not .. if you haven't got it download quickpar .. it will help with all of those incompletes ( i have no idea how the hell it works but its a life saver)

Yup, good ol' Par files
Pretty cool how they can recover the parts that you're missing

You can try using another news server for fills...
Yottanews gives everyone a news server account for free, and you can download up to 1GB per month. You just need to give them an email address. I find I have trouble connecting to their server sometimes though
Here's the address to get a free account:
http://www.yottanews.com:8080/freeaccount.php
Another newsserver that you can use for fills is Teranews ( http://www.teranews.com) and you can download 50MB/day. But there's a one-time setup fee of US$4 or something like that

It was the search feild that I did not use. I was thiking I would use enter the name and not pick it from a list.
Thanks!
I'm subscribed to alt.binaries.howard-stern now, and when I click refresh then double click, a new tab pops up called "ABH-S". But there is nothing listed. 0kB nothing under File Name/Author/Date/Size.

how long did you wait to double click after you refreshed?.. sometimes it takes a while ... (for me depending on how many binaries there are it take anywhere from 2 - 15min).
if that doesn't work .. in the new tab that popped up right beside the search field there is a button that says "new" that might bring up the binaries

Remember how ****ty it was before PAR even existed on usenet? Man, I love it... although the server retention is so good on my news server i rarely ever need them.

I never really liked NewsBin Pro.. I've found BNR2 to be the fastest for me and easiest to use
How much does a subscription to Giganews cost?

Aww man, this is really ****ing me off now.
Edit: I'm getting results now. For some reason it's working after the 10th time I refreshed!

Newsgroups too me a while to get the hang of... I'm still not sure that I really use them to their full potential
Its not like napster, limewire or those other p2p programs where you can just type in what you want and its there

I found what I was after, thanks for the help. Sometimes you just need a couple words to give you an idea what to do.
I got approx 4 hours of audio, worked well for the most part, but few files were corrupted and skipped bits like a scratched cd.
