Put me down as another fan of anything but carpet.
Hardwood, laminate or tile, you can wipe up anything. Carpet, everything soaks in so even if your quick your carpet is going to retain some evidence. As a university student and young adult I hated rentals because of carpet. Although I left my fair share of stains and more than my fair share of DNA.

Hardwood or laminate for sure. Get area rugs if you want the comfort, you can throw them out if they get to the point where you can't clean them.

My condo that I bought last year has "hardwood", but I think it's manufactured or some kind of laminate or something that isn't true hardwood like Sliver posted. I hate it. I'm going to get it carpeted as soon as I can, except for the kitchen where I'll go with ceramic tile.

if you are thinking hardwood or laminate in your condo, plan to invest in some very high quality sound proofing. Check with your condo board and get approval in advance for the sound proofing you are planning to use. It will save you much money and headache later. Leave carpet in the bedrooms.

It chips and dents everytime someone drops a can or knife on it. It's harder on the knees and ankles (more impact). The only advantages are it's easier to clean especially if you have a pet. I guess it sort of looks better, but that's debatable.

Carpet is much more comfortable and durable.

Sure, you could put a rug on your hardwood floor but doesn't that defeat the purpose of having a hardwood floor?

If you could change back to carpet, would you?

I'm torn.
I love our hardwood, but you need to learn to let go of any aspirations of it looking perfect forever. It will get scratched and dinged. Trying to prevent that will just flare up any OCD problems.

I wouldn't go back to carpet because we have kids and a cat. I like being able to see that the floors are clean when something hacks up a hairball or knocks over a cup of juice or whatever.

Looks like this is a choice between comfort (carpet) and cleanliness (hardwood).

We also would have accepted "did your grandmother help decorate your house?", and "did you steal all of your grandmother's furniture when she was on holidays?" as correct responses.
