Terrible product.

I honestly haven't watched an entire NBA game since Jordan retired.

I will watch any college basketball game that is televised, I would never choose to watch an NBA game. College basketball is a load of fun to watch.

I don't like this 12 minute, 4 quarters cr@p. It should be just like the NCAA where its 20 minutes, 2 periods. It just makes it more intense.

I wonder if the NHL can capitalize on the NBA lockout and gain an increase in market share

To clarify, No Subs - sure, if someone fouls out, then yes, don't make them play with 4. But no Subs as in switching out players for the most part.

But to the person who thinks they will be too tired? Whatever. They can play 3 straight minutes of basketball without any big problems.

I actually think this will increase the likelyhood of comebacks. Instead of a team playing a possession game for 24 seconds, the 18 second rule makes them shoot it faster. It pretty much ensures that a team will get 5 possessions trying to make a comeback in the final 3 minutes. The fouls will decrease the amount of guaranteed points that on the board making it possible for bigger swings.
Intentional fouls mean either one free throw or two depending on the bonus. It also means the team that fouled can regain posession, that's the point of intentionally fouling. If you're down one with 15 seconds left and not in possession under your rules the game would be over. As it is the team trailing would be able to foul, regain possession either by a rebound off a miss or after a make, and have the opportunity to tie or win. Your rules basically kill the ability to stage a comeback. That is horrible.

They are called flagrant fouls in the NBA, aren't they. Either way, whether you call them flagrant or intentional, the team gets shots and possession, always.

I think you are talking about "intentional" unintentional fouls, but then the idea doesn't work for many reasons, some of which have been explained already.

Can't talk about the Jordan era without this:

Latest league offer is for the players to receive between 49 and 51 percent of revenues. Players rejected it because they argue to be next to impossible to receive over 50.2% of revenues.

So this continues over a less than 0.8 - 1.2% difference. Good perspective from all involved parties on this one.

I have never watched a basketball game on TV, and only one full game live.

I used to play ball when I was younger. It is a fun game to play.

It is not entertaining on TV at all...

It's not just the 0.8-1.2% difference, it's where that difference is, at 50%. Because it establishes the next starting point and nobody wants to be the loser in this fight. The players cant afford to take this hit and being under 50% is very symbolic. They were getting a guaranteed 57% in the old system, now the owners are offering a system that MAY get the players 50.2 percent but only guarantees them 46% worse case. Why would the players take a 11% paycut when they are the product and it's the owners who can't control themselves?

In the NHL there was no linkage in the old system and the players in 2005 got obliterated down to 57% which will then be the starting point for this summer's negotiation. If the players are at 46% they just lose all future bargaining power forever.

You obviously have no idea how the game of basketball works.

I have no patience for this arguing over money, but I think that is partly because we just finished dealing with this stuff with the NFL. I REALLY hope that there is no season this year and that the owners stick to what they say they are going to do if a deal isn't accepted right away, and go for a hard cap and 47% for the players.

Might as well fix all the problems right now, instead of fixing some now and some later. The NBA has to be one of the worst leagues for having guys making enormous amounts of money and not playing at all, or hardly contributing. Guys like McGrady, Yao, Marbury and Brand were/are making huge $$ without contributing a damn thing.

The NBA needs a hard cap to help lower some of the salaries of the 2nd/3rd tier players, and it needs some sort of a better system to help rid teams of ridiculous contracts.

No matter what they gain back they're going to lose when the NHL is gone next season.

I find it very hard to believe the NHL will be gone next season. Fehr may push for it, but I think the players are smart enough to know that if they disappear for a year a good portion of them will never have jobs again.
