Just curious, but how much does the average 30 year old make in Canada?

I wasn't far off that when I was 30, but nowadays my salary in $ is going down the crapper with the £.

Meh this survey really isn't that out of control. The salary aspirations are obviously high. The true number in Calgary is probably closer to 60-70, but it's not as though these kids think they are going to be millionaires. Like others have said a motivated professional/trades person could be making 90 by 30 pretty realisitically.

The less realistic aspiration might be "owning" the house. At 30, most people are probably only 2-3 years into a starter home that the bank owns.

I'm in my second year of Civil Engineering and don't really know what to expect through my 20s. I hear a lot of things from different people. One of my buddies said he hears that there are not a lot jobs for engineers, yet other say that jobs are abundant, and you just need to a put a lot of effort into finding one (which a lot of people don't do, apparently).

Obviously, I would like to make a lot of money, but I think about $60-70k in my late 20s would be alright and certainly attainable. I don't know what to expect, and I'm not trying to be too unrealistic.

You're in a professional program, so your job outlook is probably better than average.

My brother is an engineer in his late 20s. He says that when the economy is hot, people are knocking on his door. When it's cold, 2/3 of his office gets laid off. The salary, in general, is good, but work is not always available consistently. My brother spent 1.5 years unemployed looking for work during the height of the last recession.

Stop trying to sound like the humble hero. Sell your soul to the devil and make $500k starting. Then, whine and complain when you end up only making $499k.

			I'm 27
It's tough to make $90,000 a year.
I think that for starters, in most cases you need a practical undegraduate university / college education, drive & ambition, connections, and a bit of luck.

I entered the workforce straight out of University with a BComm (Marketing) & useless BA(Poli Sci) and made $50,000 a year as a Project Coordinator for a land developer. By my second year I got a raise, and with bonuses I was up to $75,000 a year.

Then I got into Real Estate sales......Made crappy money my first year as a Realtor. Now into my second year. I will hit 6 figures, but I have had to work extremely hard, work 7 days a week, and only had 7 days off this year. My quality of life has probably gone down. If I didnt enjoy what I do, the money would be hardly worth the time.

Real Estate sales can be a world eater.

I've been in IT sales and software sales you can certainly make 6 figures as long as your dilligent and work at it.

Either your highly specialized and people need your skills, I look at people with SAP Implementation skills making $120 per hour and up working on long term contracts.

Or your the person that facilitates the product, and your willing to sacrifice some base salary security for earning potential.

			I'm 27 - O&G Industry - CA. I make more than the number mentioned.

It'll be tough to find anyone who can post on CP in Calgary 9-5 M-F who isn't in an OG office job, and thus not making over $90K.

Does rental income count? Because if you exclude all expenses and the mortgage interest, then I pulled it off! Otherwise...not even close :'(
