This station is awesome. I listen to it every morning around 8:00 AM on my drive. I don't know if this programming lasts all day. The music is always excellent and eclectic and diverse. Tons of great 70s grooves and funk and indie and pop and jazz. I haven't even heard any commercials on it.

If this really is still Aboriginal Voices, whoever is running it has ridiculously excellent taste in music and isn't bending to the blandness of our backward Calgarian redneck radio paradigm that all other stations eventually fall into. It may be one example of someone taking Aboriginal funding to create something really great to express themselves and not boxing themselves into an ethnic stereotype of programming...at least during my morning drive.

I pretty much assumed it was some kind of college/university/student run radio or something because of the music variety and the broadcasters didn't sound like your typical Calgary radio #######s but more like the guys/gals on CKUA/CJSW.

Are you really considered a Jackass nowadays if you listen to terrestrial radio?

Jeez, I gotta get with the times, that's all I listen to and have no desire to switch in the near future.

You were probably picking up the Sirius FM modulation signal from the car beside you - that's why the music was good and sans-Nickleback.

In May 2010, the CRTC heard submissions on the renewal of CKAV's license which was set to expire August 31, 2010. There were concerns at the time that the stations had been broadcasting in contravention of the Radio Regulations and in particular they had violated conditions related to local programming: http://www.crtc.gc.ca/broadcast/eng/...10/ag12_05.htm
The license was renewed, after the CRTC gave the station a stern rebuke for failing to abide by previous conditions, until August 31, 2012: http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2010/2010-614.htm

I thought of that but I don't lose the signal as I drive around the city. Also, I just tuned in at work on a radio here and they were playing Amy Winehouse.

I don't have any luck getting this on Tune In but have heard it on standard radio. Top 5 Favorite presets that I flip around on commercial free :

1. NME radio
2. KEXP- Seattle
3. 105.2 Phantom : Dublin
4. 104.9 XFM : London
5. 98.8 BBC Radio 1 : London

They played a newscast at 5:00 pm that was mainly local Calgary stuff. The guy reporting was named something Thibodeau and had a pretty wooden manner about him.

CKUA is still the best radio station if you're in it for the music. It's like the PBS of radio, and if they play popular music, it will be some rare live recording of eric clapton or something like that.

Awesome stuff.

That is why I mentioned that I have to flip around to keep it commercial free....out of those mentioned NME and KEXP are the two that I tend to stick to the longest without being squeezed out by commercials as they rarely have any....

Looks like the allegations are not enough spoken word content. I am guessing with "Aboriginal Voices" the license was originally granted to this company for all those stations on the premise that there would be a First Nations presence. Of course, that was somewhat of a exxageration to this point, it was just that company's way of getting their foot in the door over competitors; make a loose deal with the First Nations so that they back them to get the license, then sort out the details with the First Nations after they get the station.

My guess is the owners and the First Nations haven't really organized anything (thus the slap on the wrist), so in the meantime, this company has their station, with a programming guy or gal who has free reign to play whatever. The owners have the station, which is the toughest step of the process, and are biding their time to determine what to do with it.

All for diversity and allowing those different options, but when push comes to shove, and it ends up being a mainstream station sprinkled with tid bits of cultural favlour, IMO it defeats the whole purpose and spirit for why it was created.

Similar to Omni, channel 4. Gets a prime channel spot (ok, in the digital age, maybe not so much a deal anymore, but still) and has Cantonese and Indian News (the rest of the cultural programming is well out of prime time, or on the weekens)...and just before the Indian News, you can watch Apu on the Simpsons and after, Charlie Sheen on 2 and a half men.

Go to their webpage and you have to go a couple links deep to find that cultural programming, once you get past all the splashy listings for those US reruns that Rogers is promoting on the front page as the clear focus for the station.
